So This Is a Thing

And given that since the announcement yesterday, I've had all of one person say 'you're leaving, oh no, thank you for what you've done and good luck!' it was the right thing. (I think Morlith's going to win the Chat betting pool on how many people were going to contact me about my resignation after the formal announcement--he guessed 'under two'. Even I said there might be as many as 5!)

(I guess I should also say that I didn't get asked to resign because I did something exciting and scandalous. I chose to leave. Missed opportunity to go out with a bang! I could have rigged the Nebulas to nominate whatever the opposite of Raptor Sex Short Story is. Maybe Visiting Kindly Space Mormons with Casserole Novel! Sadly, I am not wired for evil so it didn't occur to me. *sadly pathetic*).

Anyway, onward. *nods*

Well, I was surprised when you jumped into the SFWA VP to begin with - I know you lead a busy life! Hope that you have no real regrets about having been SFWA VP. :)

Conrad Wong

I want to add my thanks too - I know how hard it can be to mix life with positions in organizations that suddenly seem to consume much more time than you expected.

I'm not a member (since I'm not an author) but what I've seen from following other writers and the president's twitter feed is that you've accomplished a lot and been very valuable to the organization. I hope other people let you know they recognize that. And many blessings on whatever you'll do with your new "free" time. :)

I am sorry to hear you're leaving SFWA. You were a positive and bright light in that organization. Your work in helping self-published and independent writers gain a foothold will not be forgotten nor overlooked. Thank you so much for all the time and energy you gave to help everyone out and make the writing community a more friendly and warm place to be. You are awesome!

Tygepc

Well, shucks. Having you there tipped me into becoming a SFWA member . . . and also made it possible since I qualified through my indie revenues. I hope having more time back is good for your sanity.

I'm especially sorry to hear that you resigned from SFWA early and that hardly anybody aside from the Board said "Thanks for all you've done and good luck." The last several years have seen several controversies swirl around and through that organization, which have been handled more kindly and graciously because of your influence. I'm a con-runner, not a SFWA member, though I aspire to become one eventually when I publish a few more stories. (Full-time job, a constantly traveling spouse, big homestead, engrossing hobbies, plus special needs kids has meant not enough energy left for me to write fiction.) Being a con-runner, I understand on a very personal level just how much work volunteers and volunteer organizations put into this genre to create our many opportunities for fan/pro interaction. So *I* say Thank you, Maggie, for helping make SFWA and SFF a better sub-set of society and a nicer, safer, more intersting place to hang out.

Anna O'Connell

You did good work for them!

I admire so strongly that you gave of your time that way--that stuff is Hard. Work. Three years is a good run!

Thank you. I hope so.

It's one of the delightful ambiguities of English, that one doesn't know if the Kindly Space Mormons are doing the visiting, or being visited either with, or by, Casserole. --filkferengi

You know, other than the casserole part, I think that story exists. I know I've read one years and years ago about aliens showing up to proselytize politely door-to-door and being treated by the humans as sort of well-meaning but eccentric.

David Fenger

*hug* You're going to do great. :)

*looks mournfully at sketchbook while getting ready for work* Maybe this afternoon!

*cry* Now I feel even worse. I will miss you in SFWA (even if I am still following you around).

Erin Hartshorn

Or at least draw a quick comic about it? I bet you could toss one off... :D

M.C.A. Hogarth

Now I want someone to write Visiting Kindly Space Mormons with Casserole....
