Portrait Painting T & C, Part 4, Refined Edition

This part in real time is 4 hours long- here I have condensed it into about 38 minutes.

Portrait Painting T & C, Part 4, Refined Edition

Hi Patricia, I use a variety of sizes but mostly they are quite small. Honestly its been so long since I bought them I can't recall but it's gotta be in the 2-6 range.

Stephen. You may have mentioned it in a previous post regarding what brushes you use. I assume they are the Utrecht Manglon Synthetic Brushes. What sizes are you using for the grisaille as well as the color painting tutorials? In watching, they seem to work quite well for you.

Patricia Penner

I used to use Egbert shaped brushes, hog bristle. They are great for loading the canvas with paint. If you like impastos and broad paintings they are the ones for you. Eventually I strayed away from them. I do use sometimes a filbert or flat hog bristle for direct painting.

Actually, I should have been more specific....I ment hog hair bristol which are not as soft as sables.

Debra Schulman

Hi Debra, in my estimation these brushes create similar results. Not the same, but similar enough. I haven't tried bristol brushes before, I am guessing that they are synthetic as well?

I also meant to add to my comment a question. In the past I recall you saying you use synthetic brushes rather than sable because you are rough on your brushes. Do you thinik synthetic and sable give the same results? ...and during this sesion you only used synthetic, what do you think about bristol brushes?

Debra Schulman

Thank you for the encouragement to keep on pushing forward with a painting "I know on the other side of this struggle is the paintingI am trying to make".....how true.

Beautiful painting!

Hi Geoffrey, If you are drawing on oil primed linen I would suggest only using Spectra Fix to seal the drawing lines. Since PVA is water based it is not stable on TOP of oil. My demos with PVA are all on drawing made on paper. Using the PVA then makes it possible to paint with oil over the top without damaging the paper.

Exquisite 🙌

LIFE-CHANGING QUESTION: I saw you using PVA sizing over drawings in earlier videos. Is this only over acrylic gesso? What about oil primed linen or board; how can I seal the drawing? This has been a life long problem- graphite / charcoal lines smearing into oil. Please save my life 🙏

Geoffrey Gersten

Hi Stephen. I am really enjoying your Grisaille to finished painting series. I'm sorry if you've addressed this already but what is your opinion on doing color charts to learn color mixing with oils? I've heard several painters highly recommend doing them but they use several colors in their painting.
