Studying Proportions, Part 1, Refined Cut

This is the 1st of 2 parts and it goes through the tools and concepts I am using in the final stage of this project. My paper here is Stonehenge I am drawing with graphite pencils.

This is the refined edition of Part 1(meaning that the work time is sped up and the informational sections are in real time).

Hi Steve, I feel like I can't turn the shape using the shadow spots I create and the different tones in the shadow, what is your advice on this? I try to observe but have trouble getting the shape to rotate. I'm sending you a picture of my work, maybe the picture will help you give me some advice. Thanks in advance Meytal

Thank you for your thoughts. I have used one but without the structural and tonal knowledge I'm gaining through your work here it was of limited value as I still couldn't simplify what I was seeing.

There is a company that makes them, sent me one to get my take on it. My take, I couldn't practically figure out how to use it. I get how it works, but it is so unwieldy there was no way that I could integrate it into my workflow. If you like to use one, use it. If you don't, then don't. There is no need for ruling out this or that tool- I've. seen people learn to draw many different ways.

Curious to hear your thoughts about using a camera lucida for the initial measurement taking?

I am not sure why you wouldn't have access... Perhaps try logging out and then in again to your Patreon account.

Hi Stephen I don’t have access to lesson - it is information when Iam trying to open a folder, this creator hasn’t posted yet? Please help

Hi Marissa, there are a lot of different painting surfaces that are good. If you are going to draw and seal and then paint- yes I would suggest stretched paper. If not, than any oil primed linen will do just fine. This is a link to ones I used to use a lot: https://www.dickblick.com/items/blick-studio-artists-wood-panel-flat-cradle-16-x-20-78-cradle/

Could you provide a link to the 1" Cradle panel? I am new to stretching paper and a bit confused. Would you suggest the stonehenge paper stretched with 1" cradle as well for painting surfaces?

Marissa

Happy to hear it, Marty!

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Zanneta Barbarigou

Always comparative these days.

Stephen Bauman Artwork

Hi Stephen, do you always use comparative measurement or do you also use sight size?

Arnauld Michelizza

Nm, you just posted it :)

Jerry Singh

is there going to be a standard edition?

+1 i would like to add that i would like a video maybe focused on how to achieve likeness. I keep trying and just can't do it, maybe i don't have that skill level yet.

Hi Stephen. This feels like “drawing a pear portrait”, as in, there is that same approach to drawing a pear as you would a portrait. All the concepts really do carryover. I think these kind of drawing basics videos from time to time are really great, and help fill in the gaps for people of all different levels in their drawing, like me who am still in the beginning stages. Though portraits may be the main focus of your site, having these other concept videos and lessons really help. I liked the block in video and the figure drawing video too, recently. It really feels like we are getting a much more rounded education in drawing.. On a side note, I saw the YouTube version just now of this pear ( the short version) and apparently there was no sound on it, just to let you know. Thanks, Daniel

Thank you, wonderful instructions!
