Wedding Day, PT. 1

6 Months Later...

Isaac gripped his shoulder. “Are you ready, son?”

He looked up at Isaac and noticed that he was sweating slightly. He grinned and raised a brow. “Are you?”

“Of course,” Isaac said gruffly as he shifted from foot to foot and smoothed a hand down his suit. “I just wish we could have gotten hitched at the courthouse and avoided all this.”

He gestured to the church where their guests were slowly getting seated.

“Mom already did that with my dad. She wanted an official wedding this time around,” Jesse reminded him, even though they’d both heard mom say it countless since Isaac proposed.

Isaac shifted restlessly and scanned the road. “They’re late.”

“Mom says women are supposed to be.”

Isaac gave him an appraising look. “No nerves?”

“Nope.”

“You’re not worried things will change once we’re married?”

“No.”

“You and Violet have been so great through all of this,” Isaac said, patting his shoulder. “You two have adjusted better than me.”

Although Isaac was in love with his mother, he had been a little reticent about taking things to the next level. He wanted to see how things developed, while his mother felt like there was no time to waste since she’d lost Jesse’s father so unexpectedly. In the end, Isaac’s love for his mother silenced his reservations and with Jesse and Violet’s blessing, he proposed, which resulted in this hasty wedding.

Things were moving quickly, but he agreed with mom. If this is what she wanted, what did it matter how long she’d known him? Observing his mother and Isaac over the past six months, it was patently clear that she hadn’t loved his father the same way she did Isaac. She was happier than he’d ever seen her. Was it meant to be that his father would pass so that he and his mom could find Isaac and Violet?

“There they are,” Isaac said a second before he saw a minivan turning into the parking lot.

Isaac hurried forward. He followed in his wake, adjusting his tie. The first suit he’d worn was for his dad’s funeral. He was glad it was a happy occasion that made him don his second suit.

“Late enough to make an entrance, not late enough to be rude,” Molly called as she leapt out of the driver’s seat and came around to open the side door.

Mom’s friend hesitated.

“You don’t want to wait inside? It’s bad luck to see the bride before the wedding.”

“I don’t believe in that stuff,” Isaac said impatiently and stepped forward to open the door himself.

“Okay, okay,” Molly said with a teasing smile. “Hold your horses.”

When Molly swung the door open, Isaac took a step before he halted and breathed, “Violet.”

Jesse stepped to his side to get a look and felt his heart skip. Violet blushed as she took Molly’s hand and carefully stepped out of the van. She self-consciously shook out the skirt of her pale blue gown and batted at one of two spirals that framed her face.

“You look…” Isaac sounded choked up.

Violet beamed and stepped aside for mom. He’d seen the gown hanging in her room and hadn’t thought much of it, but the sight of his mom in a white gown and short veil made his chest tighten. She was grinning from ear to ear. Molly stood off to the side, capturing the moment as they took each other in.
