Context: She's gaining a better understanding of Roth and why he is the way he is. This is the resulting inner monologue.

She ignored the lump in her throat as she brushed her lips over the top of his spine. She fell for a man who had never been loved, never known love, and probably never would. She fell for a financial genius who had struggled all his life, who didn’t know when to surrender, who would continue to strive till his dying day. Her man was an emotional mess. The fact that he accomplished what he had despite his hardships was a testament to his mental resilience. He never gave in to any weakness. Until her. And it had nearly destroyed everything he worked so hard for. She would atone for that and give him what she could, even knowing it would destroy her in the end. He deserved that at least once. To feel love, even if he didn’t want it, even if he later rejected it so he could move on.
