Roth's Replacement

The dialogue bogged me down big time, but we're blasting through and will come back and clean and refine later during rewrites. The ups and downs in this long ass scene tires me out, but will definitely be worth it in the end!
They talk quite a bit about the past and Maximus in this opening scene since he played such a huge part in their relationship the first time.
“Which one of them was supposed to replace me?”
She blinked. “Replace you?“
A muscle ticked under his eye. “Don’t play dumb.”
“About what?”
“Maximus said you had someone waiting in the wings to replace me, someone of your own class who made the grade. I assume you had a falling out, which is why you never remarried. Who was he, Jasmine?”
She tried to process his words through a haze of static. “When… when did Dad say that?”
“Four years ago, when he showed up here in the middle of the night and blackmailed me.”

Idk if Im going overboard with all the thinking but what if Roth is gathering all of Maximus’s contacts/ jasmine’s childhood friends because he thinks that the “replacement” is one of them coz he said Maximus implied that he’s of the same class as them and made the grade. So basically, he wants to be able to have control over all of them because when he finds out who it is, he can make sure they can never get her/ destroy them/ blackmail them/ be a pain in their ass or something of that sort.
