Yellow Dress Act 2 Scene 3: This isn't helping...

(Rose sits on the exam table.
The doll lies lifeless in the corner.)

Rose:
All I ever wanted was to make my father happy.
Go to school, get a nice job, marry decent man
Have kids while also somehow excelling at my career.
But things don’t ever happen like that do they.
I don’t even remember the last time I saw my father.
I could never be able to tell him what happened to to me.
He’s already in prison for manslaughter.
We don’t need to extend his sentence.
You see my father always liked to drink,
He was a military guy, really macho,
And he would chug down a couple of beers
Or a bottle of hennessy before going out
On his motorcycle with his buds.
One night he broke my brother’s arm
By accident of course,
Though my brother never forgave him.
Rather than face the wrath of my mother
He went out riding his bike
Still reeking of all that alcohol.
It was the middle of the night
And there was a stop light down the road
That he just didn’t see,
Or didn’t want to see.
A van filled with a family of five nearly hit him
And spun out of control, landing on it’s side,
Killing three children.
He doesn’t get a chance at parole for another 5 years.
All this is to say that my father is not a bad man,
But he is a reckless man
who would rather drink than talk about his feelings.
Like the fact that he still had nightmares
about his days in the army.
Or the fact that he had just lost his job.
They say that women end up with men
That remind them of their father.
I thought that Cody was so different from my father.
Turns out I was wrong.
I fell in love with a man who is just like my father.
Sometimes I still feel like I’m falling.
Except I’m not falling into love any more.
I’m falling into a much darker place.
I’m afraid I’ll never climb out.

(The Doll comes to life.)

The Doll:
This isn’t helping.

Rose:
I’m trying to understand why this happened to me.

The Doll:
Understand?
There is nothing to understand.
There is nothing about this that makes sense.
Men rape because men rape because men rape.
That’s what men do. They feed on the power.
Sometimes women do to.
But we’re usually the victims.
It’s our job to grin and bear it.
It’s not our job to question the nature of things.
Now, I need you to tell what exactly happened that night.
What did you do to make him want to do this to you?

Rose:
I...
I didn’t do anything!

The Doll:
You hesitated.
You’re lying to me.

Rose:
I’m not lying,
I’m offended by the question.
You should be asking me things like
What did he do to me?
Did he wear a condom?

The Doll:
We do need to know that,
But first we must establish motivation.
Don’t forget, you’re the only witness.

Rose:
I knew you were going to ask questions,
But I thought you were also gonna...
Run Tests.
Examine my clothes.
Look for DNA Samples
Physical Evidence.

(The Doll starts to laugh)

The Doll:
No.

Rose:
No?

The Doll:
I was never going to run those tests for you.
I could, you know.
I could do the whole procedure, just like you said.
But the results would probably just get tossed in a pile
And never looked at again.
That’s what always happens to them.
Whole kingdoms have been built on mountains of untested rape kits.

Rose:
Then I think we’re done here.
I would like to speak to the doctor who’s in charge.
I don’t think you’re being very helpful.
