2021 Retronauts Listener Survey
Added 2021-03-03 23:57:11 +0000 UTC
UPDATE: This survey is now CLOSED, thank you! We'll be in touch!
Hello! In 2021 Retronauts will celebrate its 15th anniversary and we are quickly closing in on our 400th episode, two landmarks we would never have reached without your generous support. We are grateful for your continued interest in our program!
That said, we have written a short survey to find out a bit more about you, our listeners & backers, in order to get a better sense of who makes up the Retronauts community and what it is that all you fine people want us to provide.
This survey does not require a login; it is completely anonymous. We do ask two favors: Please submit only one set of answers, and please do not share the link with others. For the time being, this survey is for our Patreon supporters only. We hope to poll the general public at a later date, but since your pledges keep the show afloat, we want to hear your opinions first!
Thank you for your time and contributions. The last year upended so many things for all of us, and we consider ourselves very lucky to be able to produce this show for so many enthusiastic fans.

I will follow the rules and not re-take the survey, but another topic I would LOVE to see you guys devote its own episode to (or a few) is retro-styled / video-game inspired music (mostly that which exists outside of video games).
Firstly, further exploring the relationship between YMO and video game music in the 80s.
Next, I think of VGM cover bands like the Advantage and NESkimos.
Moving along to the chiptune bands of the 00s through today. Anamanaguchi would be my major touchstone, and probably the pinnacle of this genre, but I know there are many bands out there using the 8- and 16-bit soundscape, sometimes even modded consoles, or other weird modified instruments.
Having also Patronized the great Alexander’s Ragtime Band, I know Jeremy is more than capable of this.
Any chance for an Anamanaguchi interview?

Done and done! Now that it’s 2021, one thing that I forgot to add in the “what haven’t we covered yet” area was how amazing 2011 was for indie titles. I’d love to see an episode on that. Bastion, Sword & Sworcery EP, To The Moon, Terraria... what a year! Keep up the awesome work, team.

A good topic kinda building on phoequinox would be games overlooked due to their perceived dated tendencies, I think of Tomba! or even retro RPGs on PSX like Grandia

My write-in for unexplored ideas was console underdogs. I wanted to elaborate more, but the form kept it short. Basically, games that were excellent, but swept under the rug after a year. Like Blizzard's SNES games, Tomba! on PSX, Dark Cloud 2 on PS2, etc. Obviously, my dark horses are going to be different from everyone else's, but I would still be interested in hearing about games I maybe knew about and forgot or never knew the full extent of.

With 10 episodes big and small a month, Retronauts will reach 500 in no time. Cheers, guys!

Retronauts - helping me to get to sleep since I think 2007. and I mean that in the nicest way possible. Listening to a podcast in my mother tongue would never work out. Maybe I should even change to French or Japanese, come to think about it ;-)

I enjoyed the survey as well. (As usual, I requested less politics in the podcast.)

Damn! I should have mentioned that it would be nice to see a few more women on the podcast. I'm sure they try, but a reminder doesn't hurt.

Congrats on 400 episodes! I already filled out the survey, but I forgot to mention a topic suggestion.
I’d absolutely love to hear you explore the “character action” genre. Bayonetta, Devil May Cry, Ninja Gaiden, various Platinum titles, etc.
I haven’t seen the development and evolution of this genre get much coverage and I’m sure you’d be able to do it justice.
Thanks for the last decade of entertainment!! 🎉

I remember listening to the OG version of retronauts on drives between my hometown and college back in the 2008-2012 era. I'd have to download them to my ipod or even laptop and then hit play with it sitting in the passenger seat with my headphones plugged in. I've been a follower ever since, and a patreon subscriber for the last couple years when I really fell back in love with podcasts. Glad you all are still chugging along and making moves to grow bigger and bigger. It's funny to think that games which were new then are now "retro" but I guess we are all just getting older. Godspeed and here's to another 400!

It was great to be able to give feedback on the show. Thanks for the opportunity! I had real difficulty thinking about something that I don't like about the show. I really feel like you all had hit a great blend of guests, topics, and entertainment value. Congrats on the nearly 400 episodes! What an amazing milestone!

Done and done. I've been listening since ep 30 of the very original run (aka the first Chrono Trigger episode) back in 2007. I've loved watching this show improve over the years, and let's hope for many more!

Quite possibly the only survey where I smiled throughout. In all seriousness, want to send a huge congratulations on 400 episodes and I'm really looking forward to seeing what's in Retronauts' future. (I'm waiting for the swag!)

Random topics I'd love to see, Sakura Wars, Mortal Kombat, first-person shooter games (Halo, Call of Duty), RTS Games, more "Worst" or "Most Bizarre" type episodes.

Some were hard to come up with answers to. Like, I couldn't think of something you guys never covered but should. All I could think to put there was to maybe expand on some of the retro computers of the time from overseas: Commodore Amiga, MSX, stuff like that. I know that's out of the normal wheelhouse, but I figured maybe some special guests could help with those. Other than that, I think the podcast is strong and going in a good direction. Edit: I know that some of these have been handled already with Jaz, Benj, etc., I meant more in the sense of "deep dive" episodes.
