Episode 312: Deadly Premonition

We're just a few days out from the release of Deadly Premonition 2: A Blessing in Disguise, so it's about time we take a look back at the first game that just happened to turn ten years old earlier this year. Back when it launched in 2010, Deadly Premonition stood as a budget oddity, at first only seen as a wacky, broken game that cribbed a little too much from Twin Peaks. But over time, this open-world mystery became something of a mini-phenomenon, and generated a small cult of fans willing to look past the rough exterior to see the brilliant ideas tucked away inside.

On this episode, join host Bob Mackey and guest supergreatfriend (Check out his YouTube channel!) as the two dig deep into the game that put SWERY on the map. Did you get all that, Zach?

Despite that I have listened to at least two lengthy podcasts about this game, this episode gave me a new insight into the game. Even though I'm not a fan of horror or 3rd person open world games, I would probably enjoy playing this game. I don't think I've heard this game described in a way that you could just relax with it and see what the residents are up to. Should I buy this or Animal Crossing?

I'm so into this game after this podcast. I have to play it.

This episode pushed me to finally pull the trigger on DP for Switch, it was still on sale for 50% off. I’ve always been curious but not sure if I would enjoy it. I’m glad I listened to this podcast before starting it because I don’t know if I would have made it past the initial “action sequences” to get to the open world portion without knowing its essentially two different gameplay styles stitched together. One thing that has stuck with me through playing this game so far: if this had been released on the Dreamcast, it would have been hailed a masterpiece at the time. I think now going back and viewing it as a “retro” title it’s easy to forgive the flaws, and Ive personally mentally grouped this along with a game like Shenmue rather than its contemporaries and it makes it much easier to forgive most of the “jank.” It’s a fun and charming game to play today for the first time.

Deadly Premonition unfortunately passed me by on its original release, but having heard a lot of good things about it and seen a bit of an LP of it a couple of years back, I recently purchased Origins on sale for Switch in anticipation of the release of 2. I haven't actually dug into it yet, BUT after listening to this podcast, it's risen to the top of my "to play" pile and I'm going to jump in as soon as I finish the current entry on my backlog (Bayonetta). Great episode (and I appreciate it being pretty spoiler free)!

Whoah, SGF on Retronauts? I've been marathoning some of his series to try and stay sane during the quarantine, myself. Also loved the original DP and completely forgot about the sequel...What an awesome, unexpected combination!

I had recently watched SGF's playthrough of Ninja Gaiden 2 for the NES (retro!). In addition to the playthrough, he went through the manual and the players' guide. It was thorough review of the game and some of its related media.

When Bob announced this podcast I thought, "Would be nice if he knew SGF to have on to talk about it." Looks like my wish came true. I bought Deadly Premonition in 2010 after watching 4PlayerPodcast play it on the then Justin.tv. I thought it looked hilariously bad and, since it was so cheap, I figured why not. I only got about halfway through the game before stopping to play other, newer, better games and it wasn't until a couple years later when SGF began uploading his full playthrough did I see all of the side content I missed (since the game doesn't really help you find it) and the conclusion to the bonkers story. I appreciate Swery's style much more now (it helped that I watched some Twin Peaks as well), and I'm really enjoying the weirdness and jankiness of DP2 so far.

Oh man, I was so hoping he'd guest on here with Bob when this episode was announced! Just finished to Bob guesting on Watch Out for Fireballs a few years back for this very game. Let's do this!

he played that game so none of us had to and bless him for it

I just have to say, supergreatfriends ILLBLEED and D series let's plays are some of the best let's plays ever, incredibly informative and hilarious for solo LPs. If it wasn't for him my love of ILLBLEED would never have existed.
