Retronauts Episode 203: A Tale of Two Tribes

For this week's episode, we have another developer interview. This one means a lot to me personally, for reasons that are explained in the episode, so I'm happy to finally have pulled it together: A conversation with Martijn Reuvers and Collin van Ginckel of the now-defunct indie studio Two Tribes. This is one of those episodes that won't rack up crazy huge download numbers, but I'm glad it exists to give Martijn and Collin a chance to tell the story of their company from start to finish. It's a great insight into the challenges of operating a small studio.

Thanks to Niels t'Hooft for helping to make this conversation happen! โ€” Jeremy

Really good interview. The guys were quite candid and frank about their experiences. It was cool to hear their perspective on how the market changed and how they were affected. The description of the point of realizing "yeah, it's time to quit" was appreciable. It was also cool hearing Jeremy's experiences regarding the GBC Toki Tori. In Finnish Toki Tori could be cheekily translated to "Of course, marketplace!" FWIW me and the kids are big Toki Tori fans and we've been playing Toki Tori 2+ together, which works very well - I'll handle the controls now that we're into the more difficult territory, but we can figure out the solutions together. With this interview I realized how much I appreciate it having no text - I think it works really really well and as far as my experience goes, having it that way is no mistake at all.

Really great episode yet again. I really enjoy the interviews I gain so much

This was a really great episode that I'm happy got made! I do feel like a bit of national pride seeing the several successes Two Tribes had and I enjoy their games quite a bit, so I'm happy to hear how it all went down. RIVE in particular is a game dear to me because I'm actually in the credits as a tester! I went to their office two times to play the game and it was really great to see it come together. The second time I was there for like an entire work day and basically played through the game from start to finish, and as far as I know I'm the first non-TT person to defeat the final boss, so that's a memory I'll keep with me for as long as I play and appreciate video games.
