Retronauts Episode 200: 2019 Years-in-Review Revue Pt. 2

Well, here it is—episode 200 of the current run of Retronauts! Which is... I don't know which episode overall. A listener wrote in last week and said we're approaching episode 500 overall, which is probably true! Age is just a number, and podcast chronology even more so give the oddball naming conventions we've used before settling back on the idea of just calling everything plain ol' "Retronauts" regardless of when it publishes or how long the conversation runs.

Speaking of running... there's a lot of running at the mouth this episode, since it's the second part of our years-in-review overview for 2019. And that means all the Retronauts East folks have gathered together once again; in a way, that means this episode doubles as a sort of overview on the East team's two years of conversing together. We got together this time to talk about the most important gaming events of 1989, 1999, and 2009... and, wouldn't you know it, we still somehow didn't make it to 2009.

But if you're a fan of digressions, you're gonna love this episode!

I'm always excited to hear about the NGPC. I picked it up on release day and Metal Slug. It was such an amazing little console with a pretty decent library of games and I would love to have a Works series for it. Also, I want a Retronauts Micro on Myth. This is the second time you've mentioned it and I really want it! Myth II is one of my favorite games with its Black Company inspired story and selected units made it feel much more strategic.

Kudos for the Phantasy Star mention, and having heard the Reiko Kodama interview and read Jeremy's Polygon article about it being time for the series' return, I'd love to hear a series retrospective. Despite there being a number of mediocre releases in the series since PSO, It's been a while since the topic was tackled on 1Up. Looking forward!

there should definitely be Matrix and Batman (1989) episodes of Retronauts, those two movies cast a loooong shadow over entertainment.

Also I feel like opinion has swung back on 3rd Strike in a chunk of the fighting game world; it is undeniably a beautiful game but between the parrying mechanic (which ruins much of the spacing and zoning game of SF) and the absurdly overpowered top characters, it’s really a bit of a mess to actually play.

I'm happy Benj isn't taking any of the criticism to heart. Retronauts East wouldn't be the same without his rambling commentary. It's what I'm here for.

Phazonmasher

I sold my NES and almost 100 games for $140 in the mid-90’s to my Dad’s Friend’s son that was moving away to college and used the money I made to buy NBA Jam and Bubsy for SNES in what is probably my biggest childhood regret.

El Pescado

I think 1990's Dick Tracy had as big of a marketing blitz as Batman 89. Hell, Madonna included it in her Blond Ambition tour.

Brian Easton

My heart skips a beat every time someone mentions the NGPC and SFIII: 3rd Strike. Yes, the end of this episode gave me slight arrhythmia

John Learned

I always think of that as more of an 87/88 thing, for some reason

Jeremy Parish

I do love a good digression

Kevin Bunch

Mildly disappointed at the lack of Star Trek V references, but great episode nonetheless.

So 207 is #500 overall? Good to know, thanks!

Retronauts

Between Retronauts, Retronauts Live, Retronauts Vol. III, the Patreon years, Retronauts Special, Retronauts Micro, Retronauts East, Retronauts Radio, Retronauts Pocket, the content minisode, and the state of the podcast 2016 episode, this should be episode 493... which means there's now enough episodes for every monster in the first four Pokémon generations. For a bit more context, that's a continuous runtime of 3 weeks, 4 days, 3 hours, 47 minutes, and 8 seconds.
