Retronauts Episode 197: Konami on MSX

Another one from the 2018 archives this week as we go back to Long Island Retro Gaming Expo to talk with Kurt and Rob from Hardcore Gaming 101 about one of gaming's more fascinating little parallel universes: Konami's prolific output on the MSX computer/console hybrid platform. Published almost exclusively in Japan, these roughly 100 games were sometimes unique and sometimes to familiar to those of us who grew up playing NES, and this week we take a glimpse into that alternate reality.

They are solid, and are a great way to experience the MSX versions.

I grew up playing MSX games in the early 90's in Brazil. Konami was known for making games that really showcased the platform, as opposed to european ports of ZX-90 games. It's Super interesting to hear the perspective from people who consider their MSX games the "alternate reality" version of the NES Konami - to me, it was always the other way around!

Are the Metal Gear remakes included in Metal Gear Solid 3: Subsistence good ports of the MSX games or would it be better to emulate the originals? I'm planning to play through them during my big Metal Gear run, probably in between Peacewalker and Ground Zeroes.

I already have Thoughts on episode concepts for this year's Long Island show, if they're up for it. β€” JP

This was a great episode. There was a really enjoyable chemistry with this particular panel. Hoping for more from this group!

He's from NY/NJ, where it's always open season on pronunciation. They also call Mario "Mary-oh" around there.

My only complaint is the one guy keeps saying "Kanami" is it his accent ?

The Maze of Galious thing reminds me a lot of the aesthetic of Solomon's Key.

I was too young for this as well but many older colleagues at work remember the MSX very fondly. Supposedly Commodore 64 vs MSX was the 8-bit homecomputer war here in the Netherlands. It's fascinating how every European country had it's own weird computer/console ecosystems due to difference in distribution and tastes.

The timing on this episode amused me greatly, as I have just finished the backlog of Youtube creator Strafefox, who has more than a dozen videos on Konami's MSX games. It's also amusing because a lot of Konami's MSX games show up in Konami's Picross Puzzle Collection, leading me to think Popolon was shmup Shovel Knight. As an aside, the MSX was apparently popular not just in Spain, but also in Brazil, France, and the Netherlands. That last one isn't *that* big of a surprise when you consider Dutch company Philips chose for the MSX format. Ah, if only I could have been around to witness it firsthand.

Oh boy. Can't wait to listen to this, but also sad as my MSX joyport 1 is currentlynot working and I have to use the keyboard arrows to play 😿 I dread having to open it up and mess with it.
