Retronauts Episode 196: Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom

You've heard of Hudson's Adventure Island, but how about Hudson's adventure games? Though the developer was mostly known for platforming and bomber men, in their pre-console-development years, Hudson cashed in on the adventure game craze. And one remnant from this era managed to sneak over to American shores: the NES port of Princess Tomato in the Salad Kingdom. On this episode of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Nina Matsumoto, and Chris Sims as the crew ponders this clunky-but-charming vegetarian adventure.

Well I don't live in North Carolina, VINCENT

The Japanese persimmons are more edible when crispy but the more cold tolerant of them will also grow readily here and we have a few in our orchard. Find us at the Carrboro Farmer's market next year. Fruitonaut out!

Sort of wild hearing folks talk about Persimmons like they are some kind of exotic fruit when you can walk into the woods anywhere in North Carolina and lots of other states and find them growing wild. They are out of season now, but they are all over the place from mid to late fall. The native variety is astringent until quite ripe (best if let to fall from the tree, in fact) but a ripe American Persimmon is a real treat. I was a bit worried during this season because my 1 year old would almost literally eat nothing else.

Really liked this episode! And as much as I love hearing you guys talk, it's always exciting to hear new voices. I hope you have Nina back!

Thank you for making this happen! This is now my favorite Retronauts episode of all time. I've been fascinated with this game since I rented it as a kid. Also it was a great bonus to have Nina on. PS: I'll be first in line for a Princess Tomato fangamer shirt!

I love everything about this game and have never played it. It's revered as much as Clash at Demonhead and River City Ransom imo. Great ep so far also

I'm stoked to finally see this little gem get its due. While it's not the greatest adventure game of its era, I'd argue that it's pretty important.

Phazonmasher

This game inspired one of my favorite OCRemix songs back in the day.
