Retronauts Episode 189: Neon Genesis Evangelion

The news that Neon Genesis Evangelion—the landmark anime that changed everything—will finally become available for worldwide streaming next year prompted us to sit down and talk about the show. This episode came together at the absolute last minute, so it's extremely off-the-cuff... as you'll discover for yourself. It's also totally crammed with spoilers, too. It's a rambling discussion that goes everywhere... except the directions I wanted it to. You may or may not find this whole thing frustrating, especially given how light the game-specific conversation turned out to be. But it wouldn't really be an Eva podcast if it weren't a chaotic, confusing mess that mercilessly wears down the audience, now would it? — Jeremy

Description: You mustn't run away… from this episode! Classic sci-fi anime Neon Genesis Evangelion is coming to Netflix soon, and Wes Fenlon and Henry Gilbert join Jeremy Parish and Bob Mackey to explore the show, its legacy, and (of course) its video game tie-ins.

I thought it was Moloch, not Marduk, that was the child-sacrifice demanding evil god?

Loved it. Jeremy, for what it's worth the Beetle Saturn/Retroarch emulator makes a large amount of the catalog playable at a good speed. You know, should you want to play a Japanese visual novel.

It was a riff on the “next episode” teaser in Eva episodes... where I directly lifted the Works teaser music from.

Jeremy Parish

Can't speak for anyone who hasn't seen the series before but as someone who watched Eva on VHS back in the 90s and was forever emotionally scarred by it, this was a delightful episode.

Also, I need to stop posting comments before I listen to the entire podcast.

Btw, I looked the Works style preview at the end there.

PLEASE do the evangelion series you mentioned wanting to do. That would make my year!

We recorded a Final Fantasy VII episode the next day and mentioned the D-Type equipment! Because we forgot to mention it here.

As a Sega Saturn owner / Evangelion fan in high school, I got Evangelion Digital Card Library game. It was a series of mini games based off the show where you won cards with anime cut scenes and advertisements for Eva merchandise. I think it is solid, all things considered, and is definitely worth a play in you are an Eva fan. Also, on an unrelated note you can find the D-Type equipment from Magma Diver in the colosseum museum in FF7. Anyway, thank you for the fun episode.

I picked up the Japanese N64 game at the PRGE swap meet a few years ago and that one is mostly action and can easily be played by speakers of any language. The same can't be said for the Sega Saturn game that I own. Also, I have that box set so that's wild to hear how expensive it's gotten.

So stoked for this!

It’s true that most Americans think of Eva as a mecha series, but Hideaki Anno meant for this to be a nod to the Ultra series. In fact, the limited power of the Eva mirrors how brief a time Ultraman had before he changed back. This is according to translator Matt Alt, who has been in communication with people working for Gainax.
