Retronauts Episode 119: Yoshi's Island

Yoshi's Island hasn't been re-released in its original, unadulterated form since its 1995 debut, but the upcoming launch of the SNES Classic promises to make this platforming legend slightly more available (while supplies last). And to mark the recirculation of Nintendo's last hurrah for the Super Nintendo, we sat down for an episode-length discussion all about Yoshi's gorgeous, inventive, and somewhat polarizing adventure. On this installment of Retronauts, join Bob Mackey, Jeremy Parish, Henry Gilbert, and Gary Butterfield as the crew gushes about this 16-bit gem nearly lost to time.

Argh that damn baby cry! I'm a parent of two kids who are much older but I still remember that annoying sound and it drove me craaazy. In game and real life. I just played this last year on actual hardware and it was the only part of the game that made me want to rage. Especially when it interrupted the amazing underground music. Whenever it happens, I'm flinging eggs everywhere, desperate to put that fire out. If only throwing things at babies in real life did anything.

Nintendo's best 2D graphics might be Wario Land Shake It....but maybe only for animation reasons.

I remember actually getting emotional during the ending credits of Yoshi's island. It's a lovely tune as the stork is flying through the clouds, culminating in a very sweet finale with the baby drop off. That soft version of the Mario bros victory theme as the toddlers are raised. ❤️ Just pure Nintendo magic! Wonderful game...

I'd suggest Kirby Canvas Curse as another option of a 2D game such a strongly themed art style, though it was executed a bit better on the Wii U sequel.

When it comes to Nintendo's 2D output, everybody forgets about Wario Land: Shake It. It's gorgeous. I think it's prettier than Yoshi's Island.

Great Episode! Nice to hear Gary back on the show.

Nancy Reagan's campaign against drugs was no match for the compelling argument made by Touch Fuzzy, Get Dizzy.
