I feel like this is something that's gradually being codified into the games vs. what it was when it was introduced in MH Tri, but I like to think of switch-axe as a weapon of transition. Both World and Rise have had a greater emphasis on "morph" attacks, with the latter letting almost EVERY attack have an option to be followed with an attack that changes modes. Rise also had it where the amped phial effects carry over to axe mode now. And even back in Tri, doing a full-element discharge changed you from sword mode to axe mode. I feel sword mode has dominated to different degrees in all my time with switch-axe, but each game tries to further incentive axe mode and I'd like to think it'll reach a point in the future where we'll want to be using both modes fairly equally. It's something that I find noticeably different with trying charge blade. Even though there's morph attacks and synergy between its modes as well they feel a little more segregated to me, especially with how differently the sword and axe mode play. That aside, I also associate switch-axe with motion. As others already stated, the weapon emphasizes constant aggression as it has NO real defense. You can't block, there's no extra speed or dodge steps like dual blades sometimes has, and only in Sunbreak did the weapon get a counter, and that update gave almost every weapon that didn't have one a counter. I learned about "iframing" when fighting Barioth multiple times in MH Tri and evade extender is often a staple skill for a lot of switch-axe mains, myself included. Dodge, attack, roll, morph, repeat, adapt. Constant motion and transition. It feels thematically appropriate it was introduced in the game with a major emphasis on the ocean as it feels it too can represent motion and transition.

2024-03-31 13:21:34 +0000 UTCSwitch axe is aggression personified, the big trope in recent years is "zero sum discharge" but in reality by switching forms you are chaining combos for days, looping your biggest hit value attacks like crazy, also so much variety with phial types
