Behind the scenes art process: Holly and Ian

Cindy's scene was probably the most awaited and hyped one, but I knew Holly's first scene had to be something special, too. I had been waiting 6 chapters to finally draw her (although she had a mini scene in chapter 6), but that meant I was not used to drawing this character. And I HATE drawing glasses!

Holly has quite a different body type than most of ORS girls, but thankfully I found some good photo references. Holly's hairdo is also very characteristic, and as you can see in the first thumbnail, I sketched those defining traits and any other needed elements. Once the composition was set, I started drawing the line-work. I've noticed my lines have become quite clean recently, and that's even more noticeable in the drawing I'm working on now for Chapter 8).

Thumbnail number 3 is what I got back from the colorist. Basic colors and volumes are there, but as you can see the illustrations looks incredibly bland and life-less. This is when I add all that ambient lighting and additional detail to make the final illustration really pop, but in this case it was especially challenging. My first idea was that the scene would only be lit up by the moonlight, tinting everything with a blue color and pale highlights. In my mind looked great, but it didn't translate well to the screen. Thumbnail number 4 was on of my firsts attempts, but the result looked rather boring to me.

In thumbnail number 6 you can see me experimenting with adding a contrasting warm light source, to make the image more eye-catching and interesting. The source would be the lamp on the bedside table. But trying to add it in a "realistic" way resulted in a muddied colour palette that was not selling the image at all.

Finally, I decided to scratch that "realistic" feeling I was trying to go for and make the colours more abstract and dramatic, as you can see in thumbnail 6, which is the final in-game illustration. I pushed the idea of warm vs cool light contrast, making the colors way more saturated. The impact of this can be seen more clearly in the two first images of the scene, in which the background is not a game asset but just the bed sheets, that act like a big canvas. I painted it with these contrasting colors, the cool blue on Holly's side, while the warm touch was on Ian's, symbolising the heat and arousal he was awakening into Holly. This is even clearer in the second image:

Normally the ambient light pass is pretty straightforward, but I took a few days working on these until I found a solution that I thought looked cool and was also thematic. I like the results and I'm looking forward to try and do some more scenes with this more "abstract" look. When the bed covers such a large part of the image, the placement of the wrinkle lines in the drawing is also very important, but also very subtle, and I struggle with that often, too. If I could take more time with the drawings, it's an element I'd like to play with and explore more, too. Could you imagine the characters having sex over a beautiful abstract painting, their feelings and emotions solidified in the bed under their bodies? That sounds way too artsy, doesn't it? 😆

Anyways, once I had found the way to make that work for the two first images, the rest were way easier. Here I had to combine the bed with the actual background, which brought back a more grounded feeling, but the colors still tint the image pretty strongly, in this case, directing the viewers eye to the most important part of the image, Holly's face, which expression changes throughout the scene.

Is it coincidence that Holly, a witty character, had me put so much thought into her scene? Not all scenes have such a lengthy process as this one, but I hope you found it somewhat interesting. Did you like the scene? Do you think the final result stands out from the other scenes, or you didn't notice any thematic change?

Great to read about your thoughts on a scene. I am no "painter" but I sometime feel the same when writing. A sentence, that is quite good on the first look, has some kind of edge in it I want to soften. Changing word, tweaking the word order, ... perfecting it. If you would have shown me any of your 4 versions of the pictures alone, I would have thought they were great. But in the end, your improvement process was worth it, creating and revealing aspects I would not be able to see otherwise. On the other side, I do not like to read your articles or especially look at the pictures before having played the game at all. They spoil a little bit the fun and anticipation of seeing the girls naked and even the question if there will be a scene at all. Feels like reading the end of the book first ;) . I am curious about your explainations, but I have to be stronger not to read them before due time. I really like the composion of warm lamp and cold moon light :) . Artistic wrinkle lines - I like the idea. Too bad you only have one life :) .

I agree with this. I think it would be a pity if her only options were to wear the current pair or none at all. I think it would be great if Lena's shopping trip with her could involve a stop at an optician or other kind of glasses boutique. Glasses can be quite stylish and I like Holly's look with them, even on playthroughs where I encourage her to change. They make her stand out too.

Ethereal Twist

Please make Holly change the glasses to a lighter frame, could be really stunning in those

pogo

you did your point understandable. So We agree we don't agree but I understand you actually ;)

Thought this was perfectly done and worth the wait! What I'm really looking forward to is Ian+Lena+Holly though =)

Guy

I’ve been loving this.

Richard

It's such a beautiful scene, so well done.

Do you need to understand us? Eva doesn't have to betray her vision to make a product that allows player choice, I choose not to pursue Ian/Lena exactly because I dislike the concept of the red thread. I'm perfectly content with letting them be friends. Also some people just prefer lesbian option for Lena. Ian ain't female, so a no-go :)

Ethereal Twist

I think that the Holy Orders of the Emperor's Inquisition from Warhammer 40K would be more fitting!

All the "wishlist" is impossible to please, so there are different options for the development of the plot! The option of a big and pure love is one when Ian is only with Lena ! The rest of the development options are "entertaining" ! There are options such as life of evil , will make you love the "goat" ! And others... In the good old days, there was a sign in the saloons asking, " Don't shoot the piano player - he plays as well as he can!"Do not tear the author in different directions! Everything will be fine!

VALERY SMAISER

I don't understand those not willing to see Ian and Lena finishing together, this is exactly the main plot of the story and the concept of the red string.... It can be this way but then it has to be somewhat dramatic and sad. I would say to Eva, keep your ideas and surprises us . ^^ and btw great job on both Holly and Cindy scenes !

whiskyscotch75

The author tries to "animate" every character in the visual story ! This creative process is very difficult, as we can see! For example, Lena has a relationship experience! They put a collar and leash on her and wrapped her hair around her fist! I see, yes!? Another thing is Holly ! A girl who is being taken care of by her parents, and even a writer, which means that she is in the clouds, so she is inexperienced and any relationship for her is like a burn! That's probably why the author is so protective of Holly! At least now! That's how it is!

VALERY SMAISER

It's kind of funny that I'm a really big Cindy fan and I don't care about Holly, but I enjoyed the latter's scene a lot more than the former's. Although it wasn't really directly with the scenes themselves, but with how they happened. Anyway, I'm loving this posts. :)

Not male anyway. I already kicked the waiter to the curb and Axel is a total douchebag. Male roommate is a creeper. She needs someone. She only has 1 cat - don't make her a YOUNG cat lady. Lesbian with Ivy would be hot.

Matt Gorman

There's not really a love interest for Lena yet other than Ian, I hope that changes in the future.

Echo CT-1409

I hope Ian can finally bang Holly (or vice versa) even if she knows he and Lena are a (not committed) thing. She's the one I'm most attracted to and winding up with her would be cool. Have to find someone else for Lena and the other girls though (Lena lesbian relationship with Ivy or roommate [can't remember name]?)

Matt Gorman

I adore Holly so much! I really hope she gets a happy and fulfilling ending option by the time ORS wraps up. <3

Diana

If Eva would even thought about it, a short visit from local chapter of Spanish Inquisition would immediately change her mind. That shithead doesn't deserve any girl. ;)

Brother Bethor

It's amazing love scene. Your hard work really paid off here. I'm reassured that when Lena & Holly scene finally come true it will be as beautiful and sexy as this one (I'm trying not to overhype that else it will end just as it did with Cyberpunk 2077). I haven't noticed it when I've played it but in the last picture, Holly looks like she is already pregnant. ;)

Brother Bethor

It's nice to read of the thinking you put into Holly's scenes. Since I'm not going to experience her scenes with Ian in-game, I am hopeful and enthusiastic about how her scenes with Lena will turn out. I am very much looking forward to getting to that part of the story. Going for Lena/Holly has made me a patient person :D

Ethereal Twist

Imagine the meltdowns if it was Robert instead of Ian with Holly.
