In our third of four Spielberg related bonus episodes the BC:SF crew tries to stay awake as they tackle his anthology installments with his segment of Twilight Zone: The Movie (Kick the Can) as well as his episodes of Amazing Stories (Ghost Train S1E1 / The Mission S1E5)

Other topics include: Old-timey street / alley games, the meaning of kick the can, Hong Kong Phooey, David Sims Science Expert, Ben’s first mistake.

And of course, in our Twilight Zone: The Movie / Amazing Stories episode:

🚨🚨MAJOR SPOILER WARNING FOR CAPTAIN AMERICA: BRAVE NEW WORLD.🚨🚨

Comments

The setup in The Mission is a true story- it came up in a wwii documentary I watched- possibly the world at war series which came out in the 1970s. Sadly in the real life story, the plane landed, the ball turret gunner was killed, and the whole control tower and ground and plane crews watched it happen. In a war full of horror and tragedy this was one of the most chilling individual stories I had heard. Still haunts me to this day.

Yep, that's a Yub Nub drop, from the Ewok victory song at the end of ROTJ https://youtu.be/po5HxJgyaMU?feature=shared

While it may not solve all of its problems, I wonder if The Mission would be improved if the landing gear just happens to work when they try it one last time instead of becoming a cartoon version. That way it’s more about the power of hope and belief, than one man’s frightening ability to reshape reality.

Benjamin Adgate

Spielberg loves a choo-choo

Matt Matecki

Jerry Goldsmith, not John Williams, scored Kick the Can.

Michael Pierce

Rad Rodge

Griffin was a so good at the box office game. That’s all.

Boris and Natasha: The Movie erasure during the Hanna-Barbera comments. ;)

Alex Villarreal

It's weird to talk about how there hasn't been any successful Twilight Zone type show when Black Mirror is a ubiquitous part of our pop culture I do not know anyone my age that has not watched Black Mirror

Harry Kolmer

For me Hitchcock presents, TZ and Amazing Stories are things I watched growing up, the shows when I can't sleep at 2 am so it was a little hard for me to listen to them drag The Mission, I loved it since it aired.

Boogie

🫡 it’s my duty and honor!

Kevin Konen

Thank you for this real nerdy shit

Michael Hashizume

Griffin Newman for mo-cap Hong Kong Phooey it's not even whitewashing. Edit: Might've been a bit hasty with the whitewashing comment.

Infinite Terror

Smith was probably given those same restrictions on leprechaun 3 and delivered a masterpiece!

RyanD

Finally I have confirmation at Griffin likes the Fantastic Four trailer

Spencer Pommier

Taking me back to maybe my favorite moment of the Marvel commentaries, when David-as-Dr.-Abraham-Erskine explained re: Red Skull’s encounter with bootleg super serum “There were other effects. Like—he had a red skull. His skull became red.”

Rad Rodge

I relistened to Scent of a Woman and… they cut the Landis tangent right.

"As time was running out they thought let’s whip up this cheap one and bury it," said Brian Trenchard-Smith, who was hired to direct four weeks before shooting began. - Holy Moly

could "kick the can" also mean like "kick the can down the road"? like "to delay" or"put off until later"? like delaying adulthood or putting off maturing/dying? (genuinely asking cause I didn't watch these 🙃)

Yes, that’s true. The Twin Towers of the World Trade Center in New York City affected broadcast television signals in a way that sometimes created a ghost image on TV screens. How It Worked • The north tower (WTC 1) had a massive broadcasting antenna that transmitted signals for several major NYC TV stations. • The towers physically blocked and reflected signals, creating a phenomenon called multipath interference. • This caused some TV sets, especially those using over-the-air (OTA) antennas, to show a faint ghost-like double image of the broadcast, often an offset or shadow of the main picture. Why Did This Happen? 1. Signal Reflection – The signals bounced off the buildings, causing delayed versions of the same signal to arrive at different times. 2. Obstruction & Diffraction – The towers blocked and bent signals, sometimes leading to distortion. 3. Analog TV Susceptibility – Before digital TV, analog signals were more prone to multipath interference. Did It Stop After 9/11? Yes. After the towers were destroyed, NYC broadcast stations had to relocate their transmission sites, mostly to the Empire State Building and later One World Trade Center, changing how signals were transmitted. This phenomenon was unique to analog TV; today’s digital signals handle multipath interference much better.

I played kick the can with my cousins and watched Hong Kong Phooey. They are on fire with these topics bringing up old memories for me

Boys, I am begging. Please please please give us a Superman miniseries after the Gunn movie. I want more Superman discussion, his comic and movie history is so interesting and in the Aquaman Ep Griff said he wanted to fill in the DC gap and cover Man of Steel. Yall been teasing me since beginning. PLEASE 🙏🙏🙏

The Mission: talk about not sticking the landing

Tom

There is a porky's part fourkys. Made in 2009. similar to the 90s fantastic four, it was made to extend the rights of the porkys franchise in hopes of making an American pie cash-in. It got released as pimping peewee.

WTC shadows on the TV are real: https://www.nytimes.com/1970/12/06/archives/new-center-said-to-foul-tv-signals-in-city-area-world-trade-center.html

“Walking Distance” is I think one of the most hopeful and nostalgic original Twilight Zone episodes that may have been interesting to adapt. However, there is the tragedy of what happened to Gig Young and his wife that clouds it. I think I am biased because that’s one of my favorites. The stress of working in healthcare the past few years and the treatment we have received makes it resonate more. I apologize for this long comment!

Holly Catlin-Meyer

I watched so many of these on repeat as a kid so hearing them being discussed by younger people is so interesting.

Lobo

Those introductions

Stan

Astute listeners will remember a gender swapped Porky’s was artfully explored in the Community episode “The Politics of Human Sexuality”

Nicholas Friederich

Strange you folks didn’t mention Black Mirror in modern riffs on the Twilight Zone.

Stuart McConville

Those last minutes…anyone remember when there was a social media campaign to get Griffin to be HERBIE for the new Fantastic 4 movie?

Agustin Macias

Omg the Cartoon Network banter part 2 is so awesome! Patreon money well spent.

C Graham

I really enjoyed this episode about Captain America: Brave New World

Olivia Haidar

Loved Hanna-Barbera! Also love a house on wheels.

Josh Harvey

For the record, kick the can rules!

David Flynn

I often played Kick the Can as a kid in the 80s. Loved it.

Bairbre

I haven't listened yet, but I have to say I am absolutely loving the continuous Red Hulk chat for like the past month of the show.

Begemott

Winky winky
