The Bahamas Speed Week started organizing the Grand Prix of Volkswagens from 1963 to 1964 as a fun race between the big races. The grid would comprise of completely stock Beetles and a flock of Formula Vee's. The normal Beetles would start the race in a Le Mans style procedure, and were giving a 1 minute lead over the Formula Vee's. Even then, the Formula Vee's would catch up in just 3 laps.
Gurney won the 1963 race in this orange Beetle (well, a class win technically), the Beetle in question having already hit 250,000 miles at this time. In 1964 Gurney was the favourite among the star grid, with A.J. Foyt also participating. The story goes that Foyt's Beetle had issues later in the race while leading, so Gurney decided to help his pal out by pushing him for most of the remaining lap - until Gurney remembered the 1,000$ prize for winning the event. Gurney ended up disqualified from the race for this trick.
