Yoshimasa Sugawara may be known for his exploits in the Dakar rally, but his early career started out by racing Mini Cooper's on the various tracks in Japan. Relatively affordable and competitive in their class, the Mini proved to be a popular choice for up and coming racing drivers in Japan. Various specialists began emerging who could import performance parts from the UK or the US to Japan for racing, effectively extending the competitive life of these Minis for another few years.
