Isn't that meant to be a mystery at this point? I don't know the answer, but I could've come up with several other possibilities to explain the information given at this point: Lancer lied, the Master got killed somehow and Kirei made a contract with the free Lancer, the Master quit freeing Lancer, a Kayneth/Sola-Ui double Master situation, etc.

2019-03-30 15:22:55 +0000 UTCThe Counter Force is a part of Alaya, the collective will of humanity. Alaya tries to keep humanity alive, and the Counter Force is humanity's will to survive manifest. It can work via various methods, one of them is using Counter Guardians such as Heroic Spirit Emiya. To contract with the World/Alaya/Counter Force is to basically gain power to defend humanity during life and in exchange eternally serve it after death. However the Counter Force is intrinsically reactive and cannot stop bad shit from happening, just limit its damage. Say there's someone who releases a virus that could destroy humanity. The virus will still kill millions, but the Counter Force will send Heroic Spirits like Emiya to kill everyone who could spread it, causing millions more to die in collateral damage. Obviously this disparity of killing millions to save millions is what caused Emiya to become embittered and want to quit his contract with the World.

2019-03-30 00:46:32 +0000 UTCYou're probably sick of hearing this by now, but the nature of a route-based story means that there's going to be some foreshadowing for or references to other routes that might not get fully addressed in this particular route. So yes, it was said a few times that Lancer's master was female. And yes, it was mysterious that Gil was talking to Sakura. It might be annoying that lots of details like these are largely ignored in UBW, but it helps to look at them as buildup/teasers for what else you can look forward to in the Fate series.
