EP.322 Confession of the Truth

"This isn’t right... It’s not!"

Yuna, causing a commotion in the courtroom, pointed at the perpetrator.

The death of her precious younger sister was not something that could be brushed aside with just one hour of community service.

"This is too much!!"

Yuna glared at the perpetrator, who showed no sign of remorse, and appealed to the judge.

"Your Honor! Why is the punishment so light?! That man killed someone! He killed my younger sister!"

Yuna felt like she was going mad from the injustice.

Not only had her sister, who should have lived a happy life, been falsely branded a criminal, she had been brutally murdered.

Meanwhile, the real criminal received only a slap on the wrist.

It made no sense.

"Ahem, please maintain order..."

The judge, who had been about to stand, sighed and reread the verdict.

"Now... The defendant, while drunk, went to the public toilet and used the female livestock Seo Yujin. During use, a minor problem occurred, resulting in her death. He did not flee but waited for the police. Therefore... considering the circumstances—an impulsive act, diminished responsibility, intoxication, confession to the crime—we have imposed a light sentence."

"But... my sister died..."

"Female livestock are, by nature, beings without human rights. The defendant is being tried not for killing a person, but for damaging property."

As the judge said, Seo Yujin’s death was treated as property damage, not murder.

"A human life... what do you mean..."

"Are you suggesting a female livestock’s life is equal to a human’s? What do you mean by that? Are you perhaps opposing the communal system?"

The judge’s gaze changed.

Yuna’s lawyer hurriedly pulled her back and bowed to the judge.

"Your Honor, please forgive her rudeness. She’s in deep shock over the loss of her only sister, so I ask for your understanding."

"Sigh... Very well. But do not speak out against the communal system again."

"Yes, Your Honor."

The judge left.

Yuna could do nothing.

"Hhuuk..."

Her legs gave out and she collapsed on the floor, trembling.

"This is just too much..."

She tried to hold back her tears, but

big drops fell to the floor against her will.

"I’m sorry, Yujin..."

Blaming her own helplessness, Yuna clenched her fists and stood up.

"Hhuuk..."

She couldn’t let it end like this.

The injustice was maddening.

"Hey..!"

Yuna grabbed the wrist of the perpetrator, who was yawning and leaving the courtroom.

Startled, he glared at her.

"What? What is it? Planning revenge? This is a courthouse."

"No... I just want to hear you apologize..."

"What?"

"To my sister... hhuuk, apologize sincerely to Yujin..!"

Yuna stared at him, determined not to let go until he apologized.

"What the hell..."

The man scowled in disgust and yanked his arm away.

No matter how hard she gripped, she couldn’t overpower an adult man.

"Hhuuk..."

"Hey, lady."

"Lady...?"

"I already paid my dues, dammit. I feel disgusting enough—why should I apologize to a thing?"

He shamelessly insisted he’d done nothing wrong.

"It’s the thing’s fault for not using her mouth properly. Honestly, I feel wronged."

"How can a person... do that..."

"Listen, I used my rightful property, and the problem was with the product, not me. If anyone should compensate, it’s the communal facility, not me."

He remained brazen and clenched his fist,

but didn’t cause a scene in court.

"Screw this, bitch..."

Suppressing his anger, he left, saying there was no point in talking further.

Yuna, stunned by his shamelessness, stood there in a daze.

"Hhuuk... Yujin..."

She had no way to resolve her anger over her sister’s tragic death.

Clenching her fists, she pounded her chest and sobbed.

"Hhuuuuk... It’s too much... just too much..."

She wailed, pounding the ground as if the sky were falling,

but no one took her side.

People criticized her for making a fuss over the death of a female livestock with no rights...

Seo Yujin’s death at 20 was buried without anyone knowing.

After that, Yuna quit her job.

Her parents, devastated by their daughter’s death, were hospitalized in intensive care and showed no sign of recovery.

The doctor said they were in a coma due to severe psychological shock, and no one knew when they would wake.

Like her parents, Yuna became a recluse, sitting in her room looking at family photos with Yujin.

"Those were good times..."

Reminiscing, she drank alcohol she hadn’t even liked before.

She drank, vomited, drank, vomited, over and over,

laughing foolishly every day with a bottle in hand.

It was the only way she could keep from losing her mind.

Bzzz—

She kept getting texts from Min-jung, whom she’d cut off.

Though she was sorry about Yujin’s death, Min-jung asked Yuna to help prevent more victims like her sister.

"I don’t want to..."

Now wanting to do nothing, Yuna turned off her phone and curled up in her room.

"Hhuuk..."

She wanted to help Min-jung and fight for victims,

but just seeing others like her sister was too painful.

With lingering PTSD, Yuna didn’t leave the house and lived like a shut-in.

A few days passed.

The hospital called about her parents.

They had regained consciousness, but their condition hadn’t improved—they spent nights crying out for their daughter.

The doctor recommended psychiatric hospitalization,

saying social isolation was needed until their emotional wounds healed.

Yuna, their only family, agreed after much thought.

"Hhuuk..."

After completing her parents’ admission, Yuna returned to an empty house and cried sadly,

finding the once lively home now unfamiliar.

Her dead sister would never return...

and no one knew when her parents’ treatment would end.

"I’m so lonely..."

How long would she have to stay alone in this big house?

Yuna, clutching a bottle of soju, went to her room and lost herself in memories with her sister.

A few more days passed.

She couldn’t go on like this—she couldn’t face her sister in the afterlife without clearing her name.

Desperate to right the injustice, Yuna resolved to meet the head of the communal facility directly.

Though the situation was beyond repair,

she hoped that, if she pleaded sincerely, at least her sister’s status could be restored as a human.

She searched the communal facility website,

but no matter how hard she looked, she couldn’t find any info about the director or even regular staff.

Security had been tightened due to the protest movement.

It was nearly impossible for an ordinary person to meet the director.

"Hhuuk..."

She could have asked Min-jung for help,

but after ignoring all her messages and turning her back on other victims,

she felt too ashamed to reach out now.

In the end, Yuna could do nothing.

"Hhuuk... Yujin... I’m sorry..."

Blaming her own helplessness, Yuna broke down in tears.

Desperate to do something, she searched everywhere and finally found the facility’s counseling phone number.

"Huuu..."

Taking a deep breath to calm herself,

she prayed—just this once, please let her wish come true—and dialed the number.

Riiing—

“Yes, this is Lee Seong-jun at the communal facility counseling office.”

“Ah... hello...”

Yuna answered with a trembling voice.

She’d called, but her throat was so tight she could barely speak.

“What’s your business?”

“Um... could I get the director’s phone number?”

There was no response.

She wondered if the call had been cut, but could still hear background noise.

“Hello?”

After about ten seconds of silence, the counselor spoke.

“Why? What’s your business?”

“I... I want to clear my sister’s injustice.”

“Excuse me? What do you mean?”

Should she just say it?

“Well... it’s just... um...”

“What is it? Please tell me quickly.”

Should she speak?

Is this the right way?

...

She didn’t know.

But there were no other options left.
