Cretaceous Seas, Game Development Details

Here's a rough breakdown of my thoughts and aspirations for the game. Hopefully this will bring some clarity to anyone wanting to know more about what this project is.

- The game will have the look of a traditionally animated film, with every scene entirely drawn by hand.

- It's going to be a 2D platformer with a basic combat system.

- In terms of genre, it's sci-fantasy in the vein of the sword & sorcery niche.

- The demo will be free to play when it's ready.

- There will be one costume in the demo but I'm planning to include variants in a DLC.

- Ayla, the main character, has to survive in a harsh world full of dangers. That'll include a wide variety of scenarios, including dinosaurs and woman-eating carnivorous plants. There's more to the plot but that's intended to come out during game play.

Let's talk funding:

- When I have a bit more to show for it I'll be launching a kickstarter campaign to get the necessary funding. Making a game is expensive and time-consuming, so I'll need to know upfront if there's going to be enough interest to keep this project rolling. The approximate goal I have in mind currently is $25k, which is just enough to cover my costs. The kickstarter will be a ONE MONTH fundraiser. I'm not expecting that to be before January, realistically. If the funding goals are met, then it's full steam ahead!

- My funding on patreon is NOT going to count towards the kickstarter campaign. However, Patreon members WILL be getting regular updates, artwork, a copy of the full game itself, and all the other perks associated with the planned kickstarter rewards. While the game is being worked on, art related to it will take the place of the comics.

- How much I'll be able to do with the game depends entirely on the funding. If I meet my minimum funding goals, I can make the game. If I'm lucky enough to surpass them, I can spend more time on the game and make it that much better. There are going to be some special stretch goals but I'll wait to reveal my ideas on those until they're relevant.

Comments

this is lookin good

It's a little too soon to know with any certainty. It'll take a few months to animate all the basic motions for Ayla and the creatures, like probably something in the territory of 4-5 months. Total production art production, stuff like painting in all the backgrounds, will be a few more weeks after that. I'd like to have at least a very rough demo out in that first 6 months, with at least one level. The actual finished game is another story. Easily a year for the first full release, if not longer. Unless the kickstart does amazing and I can bring on a small team I'll be doing nearly everything myself.

Any ball park estimate on when it’ll be ready? I’m really looking forward to it!
