Open DND

As many of you know, Wizards of the Coast recently released a statement on the updates to the open game license. In this announcement, they stated that the new OGL will no longer have a royalty structure and that they would not use other creators' content without their permission.

There are a lot of outright lies in their announcement, as well as a fair bit of gaslighting, and many, many things left unresolved. And a statement that reads like something Michael Scott would say "...you’re going to hear people say that they won, and we lost because making your voices heard forced us to change our plans. Those people will only be half right. They won—and so did we."

Some Concerns:

Stating there will be no royalty "structure" does not ensure there won't be any paid royalties, and by signing the new OGL document creatives already give permission to WotC to use their content (sneaky). There was no clarification on reformatting, and the statement suggests that only content already released will still be covered under the current 1.0 OGL meaning WotC IS moving forward, (shaving off a few hard edges) with the new ogl.

While some might be placated by the tone-deaf response, many in our community (ourselves included) are skeptical and angry about the proposed changes to the decades-old OGL being proposed by WotC. There is a very real concern that WotC will simply wait for the community to lose interest before pushing this new OGL through, one which could have dire ramifications for all third party creators.

What to do:

It has been discovered that Hasbro and Wizards really only care about one thing, their bottom line. This is why we are encouraging everyone in our community to join the open dnd movement. #opendnd #stopthesub. You can support your favorite third-party creators (like us) by sending a message to Wizards in the only language they seem to understand, canceling your dnd beyond subscription.

We want to keep making awesome content for you all for years to come, and we appreciate you supporting us and thousands of other small creators by joining the fight to keep the OGL truly open for all. Thanks for always supporting us, and for what you as a community have already done to save the game we all love so much.
