Lolita is a famous novel by Vladimir Nabokov, where the (unreliable) narrator, an older man, is a sexual predator obsessed with a 12-year old girl who he abducts and abuses. Though it is not her name, the narrator calls this girl Lolita. It is a highly controversial work, with some defending it as art, while others believe it is anti-feminist and promotes sexual abuse of minors. (In the case of one of the film adaptations, I believe one of the producers actually initiated a sexual relationship with the actress playing the lead girl, who was 16 at the time.) I have never read it all the way through, because I’m a survivor of childhood SA, and it was honestly too traumatizing for me to read. When Charles references it in the musical, he is pointing out the inappropriate nature of the relationship between Beetlejuice and Lydia, but then plays it off as though he’s giving reluctant approval for the marriage to happen. It’s very dark humor, given Lolita’s subject matter.
