Patroncast - S04E16 - Should I drop my Nextcloud instance?

Hey everyone!

In this episode, I talk about:

I hope you'll en joy listening to this one, and have a great week!

I've switched my Nextcloud instance to using object storage instead of the VM's disk. It's much cheaper than scaling up the entire VM, 250GB costs $5 at DigitalOcean. So currently I'm paying $23.3 per month, but I'm thinking about alternatives too 😀 For that price I get 2GB of RAM and a single CPU core - a faster variant, but still just one core. It's not the smoothest experience - the load times are so-so and the whole thing occasionally freezes up. I want to try self-hosting at home while still using the object storage. Haven't looked into it yet, but if NC can cache files locally while syncing with the object storage in the background, it'd be a very nice setup - fast, cheap and with possibility of recovery in case of losing my local hardware.

I can recommend netcup.de / netcup.eu for self-hosting. They are based in Germany and pretty affordable, I have several servers there including my nextcloud instance for many years at this point. You can use your own installation isos as well, so you can use whatever distro you like and do LUKS encryption as well. They often have sales too. I pay far far less than 50 euro per month.
