The story of Flowerspread (video)

In this Patreon-only video I tell the story of "That CD that you can not buy"... This video goes live as I am travelling, so I might be a bit slow in responding.

I hope you’re committed to your wife too 😉

"...It was just an expensive experiment I overdid a bit" - I know that feeling. :-) It should be my epitaph. Meanwhile I keep telling my wife its because I am committed to it (the experiment). I have been committed to a lot of things...

Martijn Peters

I’ll check it out :-)

That second track instantly made me think of the music of Cristobal Tapia De Beer - Hey, he famously just walked off of White Lotus - you should send a copy to Mike White!

Glenn Broadway

Hm, probably not 😁 But you never know…

Posy

What do you mean with that 😁

Thank you!! :)

I find it so cool that you took this "failed experiment" and through storytelling you turned it in to great art. You keep doing this, and it's wonderful. Eventually you might come to the conclusion that you ARE an awesome artist (which I have already concluded long ago). As such, this CD that you don't seem so proud of produced a charming story around it that I found so inspiring. It's something that I think all artists can relate to: the endless debate about whether anyone will ever take our artwork seriously (and then questioning if WE can take our own art seriously). This is what makes your work so special - completely honest and self-aware, sharing your passion for making things. It is the act of making itself that becomes the artwork. I would gladly pay 100.- for this CD, because it's not a music just CD, it's a collectable behind a great story from one of my favorite storytellers. I can't wait to listen to the whole thing some day on my vintage CD player!

I suppose you could prepare a second CD containing music that you like better now and release it alongside the old one as a double-CD album, reusing your painted cover art which is quite pretty. Flowerspread: Now and Then Flowerspread: Strange and Stranger Flowerspread: A kinder garden 😂

Thank you :) Wow nice, synthforum, I can’t remember the last time I posted there.. The demos on the original website were made in flash I believe, so they can’t be played anymore. Time that I spin up very old computer again 😉

I genuinely love this album! Yes, it is utterly weird, but somehow it’s right up my alley (I might be a tad weird too ...). To my ears it sounds surprisingly well-produced and mixed. Stereo image, detail in the bass, the layers and textures – from the energetic Frappant to the noisy Casio ToneBank beeps and boops in Glow, it just works so incredibly well. Perhaps I’m the odd-one-out here, but I think you shouldn’t be so harsh on your young self’s work ;) Also, I appreciate the artwork, CD mastering (with CD Text!) – it all shows an incredible attention to detail (that has become synonymous with your work). Also, IMO there is nothing inherently wrong about weird music; even though it might not result in the most accessible songs, to me it is so much more valuable than whatever pop song that sounds like any other and uses the same clichés. A while ago I saw your post on the synthforum in which you considered throwing away all the CDs (you almost couldn’t give them away, as i recall), this broke my heart a bit ... I am so glad to see they have ‘survived’. I suspect with your current viewership you could sell them all if you can find a good method of distribution. Those demos from snashmusic.com, can they still be found somewhere? I’ve searched before on the internet archive but the audio files have sadly never been archived.

Ah, nice! Glad to hear you like it. What a strange taste you have 😁

I might be showing my age, but i didn't know how to curate music anymore. Smartphones, drm, etc. it seems to be all about streaming and everything else is very very difficult now

i'm one of the people requesting one in your early youtube days (though that still feels quite recent) and do play it occasionally. Thank you for telling the story behind it! Also, I don't feel it's a bad album at all. Sure it's very experimental, but I do enjoy listening to it :)
