ONE PIECE Episode 1 ANIME reaction PATREON | I'm Luffy! The Man Who's Gonna Be King of the Pirates!

*I'm going to watch the 2nd episode in the ORIGINAL LANGUAGE with ENGLISH SUBS :)

The series begins with an attack on a cruise ship at the hands of Alvida. Coby, a slave of Alvida, discovers a barrel. One of Alvida's pirates attempts to open the barrel, but a young boy emerges and accidentally hits him. The remaining pirates attack him, but the stranger stops them and says that his name is Monkey D. Luffy. Luffy drags Coby to the storage cellar of the ship, where he eats and converses with Coby, who reveals his dream of being a marine. Alvida confronts Luffy, but he escapes and knocks her pirate crew down with his Devil Fruit power. Luffy explains that he ate the Gum-Gum Fruit, therefore he has the properties of rubber. Coby, inspired by Luffy, stands up for himself when Alvida confronts them. Luffy uses his Gum-Gum Pistol technique on Alvida. Luffy and Coby sail away in a "borrowed" boat from Alvida's crew. Luffy asks about the pirate hunter Coby mentioned earlier. Coby says that he was captured by the Marines, and Luffy announces his intention of asking him to join his crew.

HIGHLY recommend watching it subbed! It's just that the standard of English dubbing back when One Piece came out was really, really awful and usually mistranslated, etc. Hopefully you'll enjoy it better that way. In my opinion pretty much all anime sounds unnatural in English anyways.

If you don't like it, don't feel forced to continue. But i think the first episode as standalone is maybe not the best representation of Luffy. Because of the hitting for example. And the english dub is (at least in my opinion) really bad. The original japanese version is great and i like the german one. But the english one just feels wrong. There is a reason why most reaction videos on youtube are using the japanese version. Most people think it's better. I think it is a good idea to try at least the second episode and the japanese version. If you still don't like it and don't want to continue, you could maybe watch (for yourself) the backstory of Nami in the anime. Or how Sanji leaves the Baratie. Especially the Backstory of Nami is longer and works much better than in the live action version. Maybe there are videos on youtube or someone can tell you the specific episodes. And if you think the anime is missing heart, try episode 6 for example. That was a first small glimpse of what this anime can do. And it wasn't in the live action version, so it would be new for you. And the mentioned scenes with Sanji / Nami have a lot of heart as well. The live action improved some things. Other things are way better in the anime. In the end the anime wins. The important and emotional stuff works better in the anime. At least in my opinion. And there is more humor in the anime as well. But as i said, don't feel forced to continue. If you don't like it, that's ok. And if you continue, don't fee forced to like everything. If you don't like something, be honest about it.

I think my problem was watching the English version. So i'm going to watch the 2nd episode in the original language with english subtitles :)

I can see the problems you have with Luffy here. I got the same feeling when i watch the first episode again and maybe its intentional for showing that he is not really aware of Coby`s situation in that moment. He also is a person who doesn't help people just because. Coby at the start was not a person who thought about something to better his life. Luffy`s target to become pirate king and how he talks about it, so sure of getting the One Piece, changed Coby in this episode. So Luffy decides to back him up because he needs it. The biggest problem is probably the English DUB. It dosen`t feel right for Luffy and thats why i can`t watch more then 2 or 3 episodes with this voice. Its not bad, but dosen`t fit the character. The German DUB is pretty good, so i was blessed as a child and today i`m only watching SUB with the original voices. 99% of times the original is simply the best way to consume something.

I have never watched the Dub so I don't know if its because of that. Luffy is as others have said blunt, hes aloof and says whats on his mind. But hes not a bad guy or an ass. I went a head and watched the first episode of the Dub and I feel like he does come off a bit douchey instead of uncaring/unbothered.

I would say he definitely becomes more lovable. He's very open minded and in this first episode he's kinda a dick to Coby but I dont think that really keeps up at all at least in my memory. I've never watched the english dub tho so maybe its just an issue there cuz I never really thought of Luffy as an asshole in the anime sub

luffy's more blunt in the anime. he just says whats on his mind. 1st episode is probably where he showcased that the most. the more episodes you get through the more of the luffy you know shows up
