As promised, the process video for my River painting! This one is a typical example of how often I can change ideas as I go. The pose changes a bunch of times and the end result is basically very different from the initial sketch and setup. But I’m a big supporter of just going with the flow and changing things if you feel like you need to - even though that can lead to a more chaotic process, it so...

I had an idea to paint some kind of river spirit for a while, and I finally sat down and created this one! This idea and pose changed a bazillion times while painting it, so I’m putting together the process video so you can see how a process like that goes. It’s really chaotic but sometimes also liberating to change stuff as you go! Hope you like this one ~ I'll post the process as soon as that's done!

I’ve been so inspired by the art of Egon Schiele lately. I wanted to make some studies that specifically explored the ways he used color and skintone variation in his watercolor portraits. I really enjoyed it! I feel like it’s really changing my way of studying anatomy and facial structures.

Last month I hung out with some artist friends and headed to the Naturalis in Leiden to draw animals! Naturalis is a biodiversity center and features lots of taxidermy animals and dinosaur skeletons. We figured this would be a lot easier to draw than our usual zoo sessions, since the animals are not moving all the time like live animals. Unfortunately it was actually quite challenging because the lighting kept changing :’) ...

It's time for yet another tutorial! This one is on painting different surfaces. It's about how I approach painting a very shiny surface vs. a softer one, and outlines a general workflow that can apply to any different kind of surface texture!
I use a lot of different brushes in this one. Here is an overview:
This month we will be drawing flowers and plants together! It's the perfect time of year to observe and study blossoms, new leaves, and budding flowers.

To all of you who celebrate, I hope you have a lovely easter! I don't really celebrate it formally but it's always a great excuse to make a delicious brunch!

OUT OF IDEAS
This was one of those months where I realized I didn’t have any WIPs left to finish! I have finalized most of the ones I had lying around, and the ones that were left over weren’t really working out. Whenever I reach a phas...

This month’s challenge for flame members was on drawing extreme angles and foreshortening! It was all about capturing overlapping shapes and understanding how the body and head look from angles that we don't usually draw them in. It was a tough one but lots of fun to do!
Flame members also get the full process video, plus a resource that talks you through my process and explains my creative choices in making these studies. It also discusses common mistakes and gives some tips! Those ...

This morning, I was prepping some of my sketches from last month for social media. While I was adjusting the colors, I got carried away and before I knew it I found myself painting some colors on top of some of them! I really like experimenting with a rough and simple way to add color to pre-existing sketches. I might do this to some more sketches I have lying around in my sketchbook - they aren’t as...

It’s time for me to sit down and come up with some new ideas for paintings to create this year! I was thinking of tackling some “oracle deck” inspired themes that represent different stages or turning points in life, which led me to come up with these ideas. I think I’ll be finishing up the green one first, because I really like how that one is turning out! Which one do you like the most?

Back to the drawing board with some anatomy studies! These are a bit inspired by Egon Schiele’s sketches. I just love the colors and contrast he used to convey his subjects. I also discovered Jookpubstock, who has some really great expressive poses that I wanted to try capturing. I included the reference in the post above! I really enjoyed this session ~

I felt an urge to paint some ridiculously tall waves. I have a lot of dreams about really dramatic waves, so it felt satisfying to paint them for some reason! I also get a ton of those north sea videos on tiktok. I guess the algorithm knows me well! Hope you enjoy these ~

Hello patrons! It's time for this month's tutorial ~ this one is on my character design process! It basically runs you through how I generate ideas for a character based on a simple brief, and how I present the artwork in a professional way. It's less of a technical drawing tutorial, and more of a walkthrough of my process - with lots of tips and advice of course!
If you want more technical tutorials to supplement this one, here are some that might be helpful:
This month we will be drawing people from extreme angles! This will help us to gain a better understanding of the 3-dimensional shapes of the body and head. Use the reference images provided through the links above to create some studies of heads and bodies from extreme angles. Focus on the construction of the overlapping shapes when drawing your studies!
