EARLY ACCESS // hair studies

This month’s challenge for flame members was on drawing hair! We focused on capturing volumes as well as smaller details like loose strands. My process for this one was really chaotic so it didn't really turn out the way I wanted, so I might revisit this subject again soon!

Flame members also get the full process video, plus a resource that talks you through my process and explains my creative choices in making these studies. It also discusses common mistakes and gives some tips! Thos...

Some info about this process:

  • The process has been sped up by 250% - so a bit over twice the original speed.
  • This painting took me about 5 hours to make.
  • The brush I used the most was the hard round brush from my own set - 2024-02-26 10:18:41 +0000 UTC View Post

EARLY ACCESS // emergence

I started this painting back in July and finally got around to finishing it! This one was so soothing to do because it was a purely inuitive painting. I wanted to create a sense of a character coming to existence out of nothing. I’m working on putting together the process video, but for now I hope you like the art! Have a great weekend everyone!

EARLY ACCESS // sketches

Here’s the result of a couple of random sketch sessions from the last weeks! Some of these are studies of statues I saw in a museum last month - continuing in the same vein as the statue paintings I made in January. The other ones are just random doodles. I discovered a really cute frog called the lemur leaf frog and had to draw that! I always enjoy sessions like these because they’re all about ju...

QUESTION // do you struggle with colors?

Hey patrons! Last year, I did a few tutorials which involved doing paint-overs of some of your art - first on faces, then on poses. This month, I'd love to do a similar type of tutorial on colors. I got a question about this in last month's Q&A session and it made me think: I do believe that doing some adjustments and paint-overs could be really helpful when it comes to giving tips on how to make colors work together!

Do you struggle with colors, and are you willing submit your art ...

UPDATE // tutorial is coming a bit later

Hey, lovely patrons! This is just a little update to let you know that this month’s tutorial will be a little later than usual. I usually get started on the tutorial right at the beginning of the month and post it in the first week, but this week is very hectic for me. My sweet grandmother passed away last week and so we have her funeral and many family gatherings happening in the coming days. I’m also launching my new webshop and...

EARLY ACCESS // muscle studies

This month’s challenge for flame members was on studying muscles! We brushed up on our anatomy skills by focusing on muscle structure and capturing the volumes of the human body. Even though I set out to draw super strong and sturdy people, my drawings always end up so... flowy. I guess that’s a part of my style I can’t shake no matter what!

Q&A // January 2024

Here is the recording of this month’s Q&A session! It might be the longest one I've done: 2 and a half hours! It's because I went off topic so many times ~ so sorry about that! 😂 It certainly was fun though!

Some of the topics covered in this session are:

  • Creating harmony in a color scheme with bright colors (short demo)
  • My schedule / routine and tips against shrimp posture
  • Whether breaks from art cause you to 'forget how to draw' ...

EARLY ACCESS // blobs

After my statue studies from last week, I got in the flow of drawing in this sculptural, blobby way and wanted to do more with that. I decided to revisit an older digital painting concept I had lying around, and render it to a finalized piece!

EARLY ACCESS // statue studies

I went to the fine art museum in Antwerp last weekend with some friends, and was really struck by the beauty of the marble statues. There’s something about the way they have such a defined and sharp silhouette, but also soft and gentle features. So I decided to to some studies based on the statues they have there - these were drawn at home from photo reference. There’s something so freeing about drawing a face purely based on the volumes and not on the colors!

Also, my arm is doing ...

EARLY ACCESS // zoo sketches

I started off the year by jumping out of my comfort zone! I met up with a group of fellow artists and we went to the zoo to draw the animals from life. Every time I do this, it’s an extremely frustrating experience because it’s so hard to capture animals to begin with, but even harder when they are constantly moving! Despite the frustration, I always think this is a worthwhile exercise because it challenges me to explore new shapes and find creative ways to capture what I see. I also foun...

TUTORIAL // imposter syndrome - subtitled

Here's my tutorial on imposter syndrome, this time with subtitles baked in! TUTORIAL // imposter syndrome

It's the first tutorial of 2024! This one is actually more like a lecture or video essay. So here's my take on this phenomenon, including some lessons on how to deal with it, skills you can work on to move past it, and a lot of opinions on the nature of anxiety and life in general! I hope you like it ❤
