Some of the topics covered in this session are:

  • Sketching digitally vs traditionally
  • Mentorship - whether it's helpful for artists
  • Which brushes I use
  • Convention booths
  • Whether I give up on a piece (including a showcase of some pieces I gave up on)

EARLY ACCESS // snow studies

This month’s challenge for flame members was on creating snow studies! Participants had the option to make close-up studies of snow, or just paint snowy landscapes. I did a mix of those! Snow is challenging to draw - getting the colors right and getting that mix of fluffy and solid shapes was harder than I thought it would be. So I took a few different approaches with all of these sketches and studies! Which one do you think worked out best?

Flame members also get the full process vid...

PROCESS VIDEO // light mode - phone recording

Here’s the version of my light mode painting process that was filmed with my phone! I usually film parts of the process in this way so that I can create a reel or TikTok video from it. So this isn’t the full process, but it covers a large part of it. It’s sped up by 200%, so about twice the original speed.

If you want to watch the full process video from beginning to end, check out the scre...

EARLY ACCESS // light mode

This one started kind of as a joke, and then became a bit more serious than I had originally intended ^^; I get a lot of comments over on the discord server for always using light mode. I don’t know why, but I never got accustomed to using dark mode for anything. I always felt like light colors are neutral - like paper - and dark interfaces create a kind of gloomy vibe that I don’t really like.

Anyway, after getting some more comments on my light mode tendencies from my discor...

UPDATE // hello, holiday season!

And just like that, the fall months have flown by. Sadly, I spent most of them sick on the couch. From the regular flu to covid, a wide range of viruses decided to use my body as a host this fall. But I have now vanquished them and am ready for the chaos of the holidays! Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:

EARLY ACCESS // portraits

This month’s challenge for flame members was on creating stylized portraits! Specifically based on the workflow described in the tutorial on creating interesting and eye-catching reference studies. Here’s my take on the challenge! I focused on using a technique where I combine the lasso tool and a speckly, grainy airbrush to build volumes. I got kind of carried away with one of the portraits and it...
