EARLY ACCESS // mermaids

Here’s my take on the May monthly challenge for flame members! It was on underwater studies, with the option to add a mermaid - an opportunity that I definitely made use of!

Flame members will also get the full process videos, plus a resource with some tips and advice for creating underwater studies. I'll be posting those early next week!

If you want to participate next month, I’ll be posting next month’s challenge on the 1st of June ~ just like last month’s challenge, it ...

PROCESS VIDEO // waiting

I put together a process video for this painting that I created last month! I’m still finding my way with paintings like these, but I think the process is interesting to share because I use a few helpful shortcuts that I’ve been falling back on quite a lot in my art lately. I'll elaborate more on them below!

Some info about this painting process:

  • It’s been sped up to 300%, so th...

EARLY ACCESS // faces

I added color to the faces that I drew earlier this month! This was just super soothing to do. I’d say creating this was almost meditative, just a little escape from daily life. Cultivating an artistic comfort zone took a lot of time but I’m glad t’s something I can always go back to when I just want to draw for the sake of drawing. Hope you like these!

UPDATE // this month's Q&A session

Hello flame patrons! This month I'll be doing a Saturday Q&A session again! I just really enjoy how low key these weekend sessions are. It will take place on Saturday May 27th, at 4pm CEST (unfortunately I can't do any later). You can use this time converter to figure out what time that is in your area!

I will be streaming directly into the d...

EARLY ACCESS // intuitive sketches

Lately I've been doodling in my sketchbook without any reference, just drawing comfort zone stuff intuitively without thinking too much. I usually have some form of reference in my field of vision (whether it's something I'm drawing directly from, or just some inspiration to guide the process), but for these I just drew without any outside input. They actually started as doodles that I was making during a phone call. I'm really enjoying this more intuitive sketching process right now! It just...

Welcome, free members!

Hello lovely patrons! As you might have noticed, Patreon has introduced a new feature, which allows you to join my patreon for free. This means that you get access to public posts like this one! Unfortunately, this doesn't give access to any of the paid content, like tutorials and process videos, which are limited to the spark and flame tier. But it is a way to show support and get access to patron-only posts!

I'm very excited about using this tool to c...

TUTORIAL // simple tricks for urban speedpainting

It’s time for this month’s tutorial! Some of you requested a tutorial on drawing cityscapes, architecture and urban environments. So I put together this resource, which breaks down the process of drawing an urban speedpaint into 4 basic steps, to avoid overwhelm and make the process more simple and intuitive! The process is in photoshop, but it can be identically replicated in procreate, because I don’t use the gradient tool.

I discuss my procreate process a bit in this tuto...

EARLY ACCESS // popcorn

At long last, I finally got around to finishing this painting! Here’s the line version that I painted on top of. I tried a new workflow for this one which made it a bazillion times more time consuming than previous paintings, and there’s still a bunch of stuff that’s bothering me but I’m going to just leave it for now. I just haven’t found an approach to adding color to detailed, clean lines ...

EARLY ACCESS // sketch session

Here’s the result of a recent sketch session! I referenced some beautiful mongolian costumes and some poses from adorkastock. The page with the bees is more random stuff of the top of my head with a looser approach to reference (although I definitely needed some reference for the bees). It’s great to see bees buzzing around again in our backyard! I always forget how much I missed them until they suddenly come back.

PROCESS VIDEO // dynamic cat sketches

Here’s the full process video for my cat sketches that I created for this month’s challenge! It’s been sped up to 300%, so basically three times the original speed. I took quite a while with this one because I was so indecisive about which creative direction to take! I also made a resource video about my process for creating these studies which I will be posting in a minute - be sure to check tha...

EARLY ACCESS // anatomy studies

A super chaotic anatomy drawing session! The overlap of the poses didn’t work out the way that I wanted, I couldn’t really choose a color scheme, and I took a different stylistic direction so many times. But I got it done and that’s what counts! ✨

ANNOUNCEMENT // cancelling playgrounds

Hey patrons. I have some pretty bad news. I have to cancel my attendance at playgrounds tomorrow and Friday due to some health issues that have escalated a lot in recent weeks. I'm really shattered over it because it's something I've been looking forward to for months, and it's an event that I've been attending every year since it was first created. It's been really difficult to face the fact that I just can't go this year, and I feel so terrible for those of you who decided to go because I h...

EARLY ACCESS // electric - remake

I remade a painting that bothered me ever since I finished making it. I spent most of the process fighting with the pose and as a result, it just didn’t have the energy that I wanted it to have. I still loved the color combination and the flowers at the bottom, though. So I decided to give it another shot and start fresh with a new pose and stylization approach. I’m much happier with this version, ...

EARLY ACCESS // live drawing

Here’s some sketches from a live drawing session I did with some other artists! The model didn’t show up so the artists modeled for each other, and the day turned out to be a success as a result! I personally prefer to draw clothed models because I like studying how the clothing folds and bunches. Although proportions and likeness remain a struggle for me! Sessions like these are always frustrating but rewarding :) Do you ever draw from life?

EARLY ACCESS // waiting

I’m going through a bit of a rough patch with my mental health at the moment. I’ve been through difficult times before and I have some idea of what I need to do to start feeling better, but it always takes some time. So for now I’m making sure to take care of myself and just waiting for my brain to become a friendlier place. And using art as a way to vent these feelings. I hope you like this one! I got the inspiration / reference image from unsplash, it’s included in the pictures abov...

UPDATE // the last day of march is here.

I'm glad it's over because it was nothing but cold and rain this year! And wind, so much wind. As someone who cycles to work, I have a problem with this. Hopefully April will bring some sunshine and warmth, because I am craving it more than ever!

Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:

QUESTION // do you struggle with drawing faces?

Hey patrons! I've gotten a lot of questions about how I draw faces from artists who are struggling with getting the proportions and features to work in their drawings. I was thinking of making a tutorial about it that also includes some paint-overs. I figure this would probably do a better job of explaining how I draw faces than me doing a full demo from scratch.

Do you struggle with drawing faces, and are you willing submit your art for me to use in next month's tutorial?...
