QUESTION // what kind of video content would you like to see from me?

Hey Patreon buddies! I've gotten a lot of feedback from you guys on what kind of tutorial topics you'd like to see in my monthly videos, and I've worked through the most popular options. I'm now at a point where I need to generate some more ideas for videos, and wanted to check in with you on what you'd like to see. I have two questions for you:

1. What do you struggle with in your art right now? Anything you'd like to see a resource or video about?

TUTORIAL // rendering water with minimal tools

Hey everyone! Here’s this month’s tutorial on rendering water with minimal tools. A patron reached out to ask how I render different textures using the same brush, so I wanted to tackle this subject with a focus on water! Some things that are discussed in this tutorial are:

• How to break a reference image down into ‘layers’ so that it’s easier to interpret and draw

• How I search for a strong reference image (something I've gotten a lot of questions about lately!)&n...

PROCESS VIDEO // lemur sketches

Hey patreon buddies! I tried to make a process video for my lemur sketches, but it backfired pretty badly. The video stopped recording randomly about 25 minutes into the process, the file was corrupted and it took ages to finally get it to work in my editing program, I dipped my head into the shot a bazillion times, and the lighting is not great. All in all, I feel this is a failed video! But I feel like it’s a waste to throw it away, since maybe someone might find it helpful. So I’m post...

EARLY ACCESS // aardwolf

More animal sketching! I discovered a type of animal called the Aardwolf, which is a hyena-like creature that lives in Africa. It had such a cute little face that I had to do some studies. Trying to do more with looser brush-pen strokes, in a similar vein to the lemur studies I did earlier this week. Hope you like these! If you’re curious about my process for these and haven’t seen my inking tutori...

EARLY ACCESS // lemur sketches

Sat down wiith my sketchbook to do some animal sketches! I tried to use the brush pen a little more for volume with these. I tried to film the full process but for some reason my phone stopped filming halfway, so I only have the beginning and the end of the process! Maybe it might still be useful, so I’ll toss the videos into premiere and see if I can make anything from that :) Hope you like these!

PROCESS VIDEO // wave, part 1

Time for some process videos! I put together the process of finalizing my ‘wave’ painting. It starts with the initial thumbnail that I had made, and shows how I added detail and modified this rough thumbnail until it felt more like a finished painting!

This video is sped up to twice the original speed, and you can slow it down or speed it up with the gear button on the player.

EARLY ACCESS // betta fish

Some betta-fish inspired art! I love their vivid colors. I was thinking of releasing this as a DTIYS challenge, but I’m on the fence about that one. Do you think this would be fun to translate to your style?

By the way, thanks to everyone who backed the kickstarter so far 💖 We tripled the number of signed copies so that everyone could get a fair shot at them, and they only just sold out this morning. I hope everyone here...

EARLY ACCESS // band of brothers

When I was visiting the Ardennes, we went to some war museums. One of the last big battles of World War 2 was fought in the region, so there was a lot of history there. Because of that, we started watching Band of Brothers and I got really into it! It’s such an amazing show, and one of the episodes takes place in the Ardennes, which made me feel even more connected to it when I watched it. Here’s some quick studies of four of my favorite characters from the show!

UPDATE // so excited for october!!

I always love October because it's prime autumn season, but there's some exciting stuff coming up as well. I'm getting on the plane for the first time since February 2020 to take a short city trip with my mom, and on October 11th, it's my birthday - and also the launch date for my new artbook kickstarter! I'm really looking forward to this month :)

Here's a little overview of how September went for me:

TUTORIAL // creating flowy & dynamic lines with ink

Note: sorry to repost this! There were some technical issues with the video so I had to repost. This one should work, if not, please do reach out!

Here it is: this month’s tutorial! It’s on inking, and more specifically on which techniques I use to get flowy and dynamic lines with ink. This was a huge challenge for me when I first started inking, and I figured out a few ways to overcome shaky and hesitant lines over time. I think it’s a lot abo...

EARLY ACCESS // ardennes

After hitting the book deadline, I took a little trip to the ardennes in Belgium! It was so beautiful there. The mornings were especially gorgeous, with thick fog that got broken up by the sun when it came out. I wanted to make a study of the sun rising over the foggy mountains and decided to make a version with each phase of that sunrise, as well as the view on the other side of the mountain.

If you’re on instagram, you can see photos of our trip in my story highlight! I miss it alre...

EARLY ACCESS // seceda study

A friend of mine took a road trip through europe a few weeks ago and posted an incredibly inspiring photo of Seceda in Italy. I had to use it as a reference for a study!

I’m still trying to figure out how I can capture depth and those finer, smaller details. I’m also still trying to work out which brushes really ‘click’ for me when drawing environments. I tried a new brush set that helped a bit, you can find it here: 2021-09-21 17:00:03 +0000 UTC View Post

EARLY ACCESS // sweater weather

I made a big deadline! I finally finished the content for my third artbook, which included writing the chapters, gathering the images, and making a bunch of exclusive art. I’ve been working on it pretty intensively since March, so I’m really happy that I got everything done! The kickstarter goes live on October 11th, so mark your calendars for that :)

I’m feeling free now that I finished all of that, so here are some random loose character sketches. I’m also in the mood fo...

EARLY ACCESS // sketch session

I’ve been using really smooth moleskine paper to sketch for many years now, but it makes the lines really definitive and sharp, which makes it difficult to blend and smudge. So I pulled out a watercolor sketchbook and tried that instead. I really liked how that felt - it made it so much easier to create blended shadows and use the stump to get some more depth and volume. These are all just some random heads for now but I’d love to try this techinque for a more detailed piece, or maybe as ...

EARLY ACCESS // wave

I finally got around to finishing the wave painting that I started last year! I can’t believe the thumnbails have been lying around and gathering dust for so long! I included some process shots as well. It was a challenge painting the water in a way that felt stylized but also believable and adding depth, but it was a lot of fun too. Very soothing with the organic shapes! Hope you guys like it :) View Post

UPDATE // fall is coming!

My favorite season is around the corner! September always brings to mind images of apples, fall leaves, the smell of paper and art supplies, and a fresh start. I always dreaded this month as a kid because I hated going back to school, but now as an adult, I love the feeling of new beginnings without the obligation of school! Here's a quick overview of how August went for me:

TUTORIAL // creating vibrant skintones

Here it is: this month’s tutorial! It’s on creating vibrant skintones and addresses the issue of muddy or lifeless skintones in your art. It contains:

• A demonstration of what not to do

• A skintone study to demonstrate which qualities of skin I am to capture in my art

• A re-do of the first demo, this time how to do it right

• 3 more skintone studies showing different types of skin

EARLY ACCESS // ink sketches

Back to the sketchbook: A sketch session with inks! Specifically, a micron fineliner, with a bit of color from an ecoline brush pen. I’m trying to push for a more flowy style of drawing lines, and a more stylized approach for conveying volumes in the linework. I’m quite happy with how it turned out, especially the bottom left one. I wanna build more on this chunky/flowy style in the future!

EARLY ACCESS // gouache studies

I finally sat down and broke out the gouache paints for the first time in almost a year! I want to spend more time doing traditional art, and from last year’s brushtober, I remember feeling like gouache worked best for me. I think I’m a bit scared to use them fully as paint, so I’m watering them down a lot and using them like watercolors. Gotta practice more and build my confidence!

I also included some process shots to show you guys how I started out with an orange base color bef...

Here’s the process for an older piece! I got a message in my DM’s asking for the steps of this one and I figured I would just make a post out of it.
