Time for a process video! Or to be more precise: three of them! I put together the process for my veiltail painting, which started off as the final result of my Procreate painting tutorial and was overhauled completely into this painting:

The first part is in real time, because that’s when I was making...

I fused together two of my biggest inspirations: art nouveau and mermaids! My number one artistic inspiration is Alfonse Mucha, and I stumbled upon some of his sketches and rough work which is even more beautiful than his finished posters in my opinion. You can see them here: http://www.muchafoundation.org/en/gallery/browse-works/object_type/drawings
So I chanelled that ae...

February is amost over! I'm overjoyed, because this means that SPRING is coming!!! I truly can't wait to watch the world blossom around me and to spend more time in my backyard. I've been counting down the days! Here's a little review of how this month has gone for me:
STUDIES
Making sketches and studies has been my comfort zone lately. For some reason I’m feeling apprehensive about starting new paintings, and I just wanna keep doodling. That might have to...

Yesterday was the online version of Vertex! Vertex is an artist conference that usually takes place in London, and I was there last year to give a talk about building a career from your passion. It was actually the last event that I was able to go to before everything locked down due to covid. It’s sad that we’re still in this pickle, but I’m glad that we’ve been able to keep sharing knowledge online!
Yesterday’s talk was about promoting your art on social media, and I d...

I wanted to do some super dynamic jumping sketches, and try some brushes and a painting style that further enhanced the movement. Reference from the awesome Adorkastock (formerly senshistock), I am so grateful to stock models that post pics of dynamic movements like this!

Allright, here’s the tutorial that got the most votes in the poll: Warmups & exercises to improve your skills! It was such a totally different topic from the previous ones which made it really fun to do, even if I created some really bad art for it. Hope y’all can forgive me for the weird donkey sketch. If you want captions, be sure to click “CC” in the play bar!
I go through the sketching process quite quickly for this tutorial. If it went too fast for you, here are some mo...

Some studies of neon lighting and how it hits the face. I used two separate references for each sketch: a reference for the light, and a reference for the face. So basically I challenged myself to imagine the lighting setup on a different face, which was a fun exercise :)

Hey guys! I'm gonna get started on this month's tutorial this week, and you guys gave me some awesome ideas in last month's review post! Here's my favorite ones, which one would you like to see?

Time for a process video! This one is for my Neon Girl drawing from last month. This video is in real time, but you can slow it down or speed it up using the gear button! I used photoshop for the majority of the process but finished it off in procreate (mainly out of convenience, since I finished it the next morning at home and the iPad was the easiest tool to use at that moment). So at the end you’ll see some of the exported procreate timelapse.
Here’s the final drawing:

A snow nymph wandering through her forest. It snowed here last weekend and it’s so cold that the snow isn’t even melting! That’s really rare for around here in the Netherlands! Because of that I enjoy snowy landscapes even more because they are so special to me. Hope you enjoy this quick snowy scene!

You guys might have noticed that I’ve been drawing more interiors lately! I always struggled with interiors in the past because I’m not great with perspective and scale. I still have a long way to go but I find that doing quick speedpaint studies helps me learn the most! The hardest part for me was setting it up, because I was using a technique that was more suitable for character art.
So for those of you who struggle with similar issues, I put together a step by step showing ...

Finally managed to finish one of the WIPs I posted at the beginning of last month! I’m craving spring, still a month or so left before we get to see more flowers around here. I made the sketch for this one back in 2018, so this one has been a looooong time in the making! I added some of the early versions of it to this post as well. Hope you like it!

One more full month of winter left to go! How are you guys feeling about 2021 so far? For me it's been a rollercoaster, and at the same time incredibly boring :') Here's a quick review of how this month went for me:
BRIGHT COLORS
I noticed that I’ve been working with super bright colors this month: bright pink flamingos, neon hair, and intensely red fish! I feel like this is saying something about this bland, dark winter and how I’m searching for brightn...

Here's part 2 of my process for Rising! Click here to see part 1.
This is the one where I flesh out the details to prep the image for the final stage of rendering and detailing. I fix any mistakes from the previous steps and start working out the amount of detail I want in my painting. The painting can still look rough at this stage, but when looking at the thumbnail (which I have in the uppe...

I was going through my old art and spotted a drawing from 2003 that I made with a permanent marker and highlighters! I wanted to see how she would look with my current skillset. It was fun working with these neon colors… and in general just seeing how my style and work has evolved since 2003, when I started drawing these types of female characters for the first time!

Hey patrons, here’s this month’s tutorial! It’s the topic that kept being overshadowed by other topics in the polls: painting (and drawing) hair! I broadened the topic a bit to make it about leading the eye and using hair as a decorative element, so hopefully it’s useful to those of you who don’t focus as much on hair in their artwork as I do :)
For the sketching, I always used the Macalabs HB brush (more info & link to the set here: 2021-01-12 08:38:10 +0000 UTC

In the last few hours of 2020, I’m thinking about how grateful I am for all the support you’ve given me this year. It was rough, but connecting with you guys was always made me happy. From sharing coronavirus memes, to chatting in the comments, to seeing feedback on my art, to even just getting a simple like or follow: the fact that you guys are here and continue to follow my work warmed my heart and put a smile on my face. Even though it was objectively the worst year I’ve ever had (thanks, pandemic), it was so fulfilling creatively. This is because of your support!! This patreon made it possible for me to commit time into my personal work, and gave me the headspace that I needed to try new things. Here’s some of the things that you made possible:

Hey everyone, here’s a quick video talking you through my process for speedpainting environments in Procreate! Last month’s environment speedpainting tutorial was more about my Photoshop process, so I wanted to quickly discuss how I create similar art on the iPad. It’s more or less the same process, except I do more with the brush and less with the lasso tool! I hope it's helpful and as always, feel free to ask any questions you might have after watching it!
