UPDATE // syn studio demo

Hey patrons! Last summer I did a live demo for Syn Studio, and they just uploaded it to youtube for anyone to watch. It runs you through my general workflow and touches on a lot of the topics that I've covered in the tutorials. I figured you guys might enjoy seeing me do a digital sketch from start to finish!

The third and final tiny house painting! I wanted to make one with a warm sunset vibe to finish the series. Drawing buildings and perspective is something I struggle with a lot and find super intimidating, and making these tiny house drawings are helping me kind of dip my toes into that kind of subject matter. I really want to get better at drawing buildings, houses and maybe even cityscapes from my imagination in the future!

With gouache, I found I could do a watercolor-style 'underpainting' where I figure out the lighting and values of the painting before detailing it further. I feel like I finally got the hang of acrylics with this one. The main thing that worked was blocking in the colors with a big chunky brush first, and detailing at the very end! It's the final week of brushtober and so I've been painting in gouache! This is definitely my medium. It can be watered down but also be more opaque and so it has the best of all worlds in my opinion! I think this paint allows me to use the same techniques that I use in my digital art, so I'm most comfortable with it. I'll be making one more gouache painting (I'll film my process for it as well) and then wrapping up brushtober. It's been quite an adventure! Wish me luck in making one last pai...

I still had this work-in-progress lying around, so I finally sat down and finished it! Feels like the right time, with the weather getting darker and colder here in the Netherlands. For me the winter is always a tough time and sometimes I wish I could just sleep through the whole thing, haha. This painting is about that! Hope you guys like it :)

Here's some random characters for you guys! Playing around with shapes and some subtle iPad brush effects. The new ability to paint on an effect or color modification is kind of a game changer, especially for adding shading with a higher saturation. Have you guys tried it yet?
