I am very sorry to say that technical issues have prevented me from compiling the process video for this page. I've uploaded the high res page a night early to hopefully make up for that.

This was that page where I couldn't understand my thumbnail. I did get better about avoiding ink smudges when I did the first batch of five but this was the first of the second batch and you can watch me stamp little splots with the side of my hand around the bottom right panel. At least they were off in the margins!

you can't pick your friends' nose, alien.

I do like filling the blacks in on paper but my left hand doesn't handle clutching an inkwell for an hour+ straight too well. This page I just left the black areas outlined but afterwards I brought in a black marker. Not as black as the ink but black enough for photoshop.

The alien has definitely added a significant amount of time to each page. It being textured was one thing I wanted its design to have from the start. Don't regret it but Inking has to be done in two sittings now.

Sorry for yet another look at the same page, but I wanted to announce that I'll be scheduling WIPs/previews to post about a week and a half before the page goes up.  I've been hemming and hawwing over posting WIPs because I got up to page 10 done but like... only 4 pages have been posted so far. This will also let WIP be posted more regular than clustered at the end of the month when I start work on them.

Between the second test piece and this page I decided that gravity was overrated. If you remember the look of the ship's exterior, right now we're in the (stationary) base that the crew hab spins around. That is, if someone's there to keep it spinning... you'd think they'd have left a light on or something...

I couldn't understand my own thumbnail for this page... like maybe blurring the other thumbnails was unnecessary but I don't want to take the chance someone there's at least ONE panel that's easy to read.

I thought mesh walls were a great idea because they save on weight and can be grabbed anywhere but they are so terrible to draw in! I'm tempted to make a digital pattern but I want to keep this as analog as possible... I did buy white ink but I have a feeling I will be hating myself for this for the entire run of the series.

This only shows the pencilling stage. I made one more attempt to get the inks recording to import to iMovie and it was a half hour of "optimizing" followed by a crash... again. Really a shame because this page was still a bit of a learning process and I think it's neat to show mistakes. I attached the raw scan of the page which still shows some of those oopsies like...

I am having technical difficulties getting the process video for to work. I think something happened to corrupt the video of the inking so there's a good chance only the pencils process will make it. :( I tried a few things to save the inks video but it my video editor keeps crashing. If I can get any video working I'll have it up later today!

Someone turn off that alarm! Inking all those breeps by hand was tedious but I'm quite satisfied with how they look behind the tube. Just those little things!

Download the attachment for the high-res page! And look, I finally figured out video embedding! I hope. This post is scheduled because I'm out this morning so if something is off I'll fix it when I can!

The stars were added in after. I used a toothbrush to splatter black ink on white paper, scanned it, inverted it, and inserted it into the page digitally. It did take me only this page to decide that I am going to stick to digital speech bubbles.

I've attached an alternative version of this page from when I was still trying to figure out how to color everything. I kinda just mashed on a bit of every color before settling on red and blue.

Finally, something you all don't need to tilt your heads for. I'm learning as I go with this comic but I'm loving how it looks with all the blacks filled in.

Still fighting off occasional bouts of anxiety but it's feeling good to be excited for a project! Like actually wanting to sit down and work instead of feeling like it's the day job kind of thing. Traditional media feel very satisfying to use... even if I miss the undo function. Page 2 had quite a bit of oopsies in inking.

Page 1 WIP

Yesterday I was able to get the last of the inking supplies I wanted and LEMME TELL YA quality tools make a world of difference. The cheap synthetic brush (red) is fine for filling in large areas but real sable bristles (black brush) are so much better at keeping a point.

of course no level of quality tool can stop me from making inking mistakes but that's what photoshop is for.

I've attached two other versions of the cover, one with no text and another with all the text on top for anyone who really happens to like to see text transformations in full. 

Next week begins Panspermia, a sci-fi preg-centric comic in a traditionally inked style! Its themes will be darker and more violent than Whacky Candy universe comics, and in addition to non-human pregnancy there will definitely be popping, force feeding, some weight gain, and naughty aliens that like to hug ...

It begins! This is a screencap of the video recording. I can only do 720p for now but hopefully 1080p will be possible later this year.

I'm still missing some tools related to inking, so my goal this week is to get as many pages pencilled as possible. And facing the fact that starfields will be a thing, gonna be a tossup where I do those digitally, one at a time, or figure some way to splatter paint without a huge mess...

The answer the question burning in everyone's heads: Yes! The Witch is the blue girl from Whacky Candy 1. Pumpkin Race is set right before the opening of the store and the deal was, deliver a fully ripe pumpkin and get a job (still gotta have the paper work!). I'm sure many millennials would be tempted by that, especially if the pumpkin in question is a bit of a self-centred jerk...

Next week will be the cover for Pumpkin Race, then Panspermia begins in June!

Style Test 2

I am not the best at hatching... reasons why I am practicing first.

Most likely I will fill large black fields in digitally but it's much easier to gauge hatched tones with them in. I also have white ink and can't really experiment with that unless I have a black field to work on... but that's for another test.
