... Matthew 15 is going to be a very interesting exercise as we try to figure out why it looks like a repetition of stuff we've already seen earlier in the book. Is Matthew just trying to really drill a couple of points or is there more to this repetition?
Fun, fun, fun!
Check your mail boxes if you're in the U.S. because I just sent out all the domestic field notes books. International mailing starts this week!

And the reason for that is because it's super interesting and maybe makes the middle point of the book of Matthew. I think this is a hyper interesting exchange and we're going to deep dive it!
Thank you all so much!
P.S. Camila and I are making huge progress on the mailing. You should be seeing your field now books really soon.

... exchange between the religious leaders and Jesus. A lot of the passages we've looked at are easier to unpack, but this one's gonna take a minute. Also, this one gets us into some implications for the modern reader we haven't thought about for quite a while.
I appreciate you and I like you.
Thanks.

I've read Matthew a lot over the years, but this passage in Matthew 14 has never struck me as hard as it is on this pass. I can't get enough of it.
How has it never occurred to me that this is the first half of Peter's confession of Christ? So much to think about.
Also, Jeff made musical magic for 0336. I'm excited to see how many people figure out the Easter Egg.
Thanks for making this go. It's an honor to get to have these conversations together.

This week we're talking about the feeding of the five thousand including what it means, why it happened and how Jesus pulled it off.
Thanks again for being a part of this.

I love that you are willing to put in the hard work to frame the context on some of these passages that significantly overlap with extra-Biblical history. That extra effort and time should help us understand better how this chunk of Matthew 14 would have played for the original audience.
I do not take for granted what a privilege it is that I get to spend this time with you every day. Thank you.

We've come to a point where Matthew overlaps bigtime with well-documented historical characters and events from beyond the Bible. Every time we run into moments like this we've got a great opportunity to 1)be reminded that all these events are held out as having happened in a real place at a real time with real people, and 2)to get a deeper sense of what the original audience would have been thinking and how that might factor into Matthew and Jesus' assumptions as the write/speak/act.
This...

Not like a do-over, but rather a bring everyone back up to speed conversation. I'm noticing these are going to take longer and longer as we get further into Matthew, but we have to keep doing them to keep our bearings in the story and to help our newest listeners to get up to speed quickly. With that in mind, Monday's episode is a double episode, but the rest of the week is normal and all of it should be a ton of fun.
The field note books are rad, and we should have those all printed an...

Those are not sarcastic caps. I'm hyper-enjoying going through these together, and I hope you are too! We're starting this week with Jesus explaining the parable of the wheat and the weeds.
A giant welcome to all of you who jumped in on supporting the podcast this week. Thank you so much for getting behind this.

I'm putting together a new recording setup, and it's going to be rad... at some point. Probably by tomorrow. Thanks for your patience with what I had to work with today.
I love Matthew 13 and I'm learning new stuff on this trip through.
Thanks for sharing this with me!

Matthew 13 is a gold mine and this week we dig deep into an oft-overlooked parable that I think has very far-reaching implications. We're going to have fun.
Also, thank you very very much for supporting this.

We're working through Matthew 13 this week with a brief sidebar with Pastor Josh Brown to talk about why John wrote his book even though he knew Matthew's was already in circulation.
Thank you for making this podcast happen!

Jeff Foote (who makes all the amazing music for the podcast) made a Christmas version of the outro music for the episode that comes out on Friday. Everyone will hear it there, but I thought you, the patrons, might like to hear it first and have the ability to download it if you'd like.
Thanks for supporting this thing and for the encouragement you are to me.

No really, it is exciting. This time around we are getting into the Kingdom Parables discourse of Matthew 13, and this is going to be a completely different feel than anything we've done together so far.
Thanks for being awesome, and for making it so that we can do a podcast together.

...I'm having fun and Matthew 12 has been one of my favorite chapters to process through together. This week we're figuring out what Jesus means by this sign of Jonah business and maybe rounding out the chapter completely.
This is fun and meaningful for me, and I hope it's the same for you. Either way, the truth of the matter is that I get to do it because of you, so thank you.

... five big speeches around which Matthew organizes his gospel, but we're in a speech that could qualify as a sixth right now and it's intense. This week Jesus goes on the offensive and it's scary how good he is in this mode.
Thanks for making this podcast happen. You are why this goes.

Hope you enjoyed the bye week last week, and I hope you're ready to hit the ground running this week. It's another one of those passages that force us to deep dive into some Old Testament stuff and I think it's going to be fun!
Also Jeff made music. Which always makes it better.
Thank you for supporting this!

The stories recounted in Matthew seem so compelling, but lots of people who saw those amazing things didn't follow Jesus. Why?
We'll talk about that this week, and spend some time thinking about why some of us look at these stories and believe and others look at these stories and don't.

Which is kind of a big deal, and I've decided we're going to treat it like it's kind of a big deal. This week starts out with a deep dive into Jesus' language about how completely he and the Father know each other.
The implications are huge.
Thanks for making this happen. It means a lot to me.

John, under duress and facing his death, sends messengers to Jesus to find out if Jesus is actually the one. It's easy to write him off as faithless, but Jesus doesn't, and the exchange is crazy rich theologically. I've had a BLAST unpacking this question and Jesus' response. I'm very excited about this first podcast of the week, and pumped to keep pushing through it.
Hope you dig it too, and thank you.

Matthew 10 has not been a cake walk; there’s some legitimately difficult Bible in there, but I like chewing through the hard stuff even more than the stuff that goes down easy. Thanks for gaming it out with me.
This week we’ll tie up some loose ends on chapter 10 and get on to 11.
Thank you!

There’s been a lot to break down in the oft-forgotten second big speech of Matthew’s gospel, but we’re getting close to the end.
When we get into chapter 11 we are going to notice a shift in the narrative feel.
I took a week off last week which included celebrating my dad‘s 70th birthday. It was a great time for my family and I, and I was able to enjoy that time because of you. That is not lost on me. Thank you.
