Hey did you know there were five Mondays in August this year?

Because I didn't! The idea here is that every three months I'm going to take a week off and not charge you, the patrons, for that week so that your support of this podcast will always only be for four weeks a month (exactly 48 weeks per year). HOWEVER, my calendrical projections failed me and I wrongly was thinking we'd have five Mondays in September so I charged for every Monday in August. My bad amigos.

...to the original audience? This is a weird team he's about to send out, and for the first couple of days this week we're going to break down how that would have come off and what it means theologically. Then we're going to do some other stuff after that and it's going to be fun.

Week 41

This week we are getting into the homestretch of Matthew chapter 9, and soon will be rounding the corner into something very different in chapter 10.

I'm not sure on the math anymore but...

...my heart tells me this must be official week 40. We're hitting episode 200 this week and that will allow me to make a reasonable estimate as to how many episodes it's going to take to get through Matthew. My guess is a lot (which is why I adopted the four digit episode numbering from the beginning).
Monday puts a bow on the passage about Jairus and the woman with bleeding, and then we've got one more cluster of miracle stuff before we hit something very different in tone and meaning in ...

I'm not kidding about how sorry I am for killing that hamster but...

...I'm very grateful for how helpful that mistake has proven to be in explaining the next passage in Matthew 9. Was it worth it? Totally no, but when life gives you lemons...

We're getting into the third set of three authority-of-Jesus-confirming anecdotes coming off the Sermon on the Mount.

I occurs to me that this week we'll hit our 200th episode. That's a lot of time together and a lot of Bible, and I hope you feel ownership of that, because literally you made that happen. Tha...

I’m still on Matthew 9 because...

... I think there’s much more important stuff to mine from this story about forgiveness and why anyone in their right mind would be against forgiveness and in favor of not forgiveness and perpetual guilt.

Back to Where we Left Off!

This week we get started on Matthew 9, but before we do, I want to say thanks for the week off and for the gracious feedback on the format last week.

From time to time I’m going a reset episode to onboard new listeners and to refresh all of is on the big picture. Today is one of those, but we get into the very beginning of chapter 9 stuff at the end.

...as to who they're actually dealing with here. Jesus flexed his muscles in ways that were freakish, but could possibly be explained away, and now he's taking that to new places that leave people scratching their heads.

... demonstrate and intimate understanding of the social norms of the day; so intimate that he knows exactly how to blow past them. More of that and more old testament quotes from Matthew this week.

Now we're into...

... rapid fire evidence of Jesus' credibility that he's going to put in front of them to demonstrate that he has not just enough authority to impress an audience with a great speech, but authority over all the things that limit human kind. Put another way, this part is pretty compelling and pretty entertaining.

Week 32 takes us out of the Sermon on the Mount...

...for the first time since, what, last year? This has been a slow, hopefully careful trek through perhaps the most influential speech in human history. I hope you've found it as useful and meaningful as I have.
Now the obvious question shifts from the content of the speech to the quality and authority of the person who delivered the speech. Can Jesus back this up?

Week 31 starts off...

...a little weird because we're going to spend two days in 1 John processing through this three-fold test for how to know if you're a kingdom citizen or not.

Week 30 has more talk about dogs and pigs...

....which I think is absolutely fascinating, but requires a lot of thought and care considering it's only one little verse. After that, it's one more super-challenging point from Jesus and then onto more raw action stuff in chapter 8.

Week 29 has us on the downhill toward...

...the end of the Sermon on the Mount and then transitioning into whether there's any reason to believe Jesus could actually deliver on that stuff.

This next chunk gets really fun in new ways.

We're starting week 28 with...

...a big giant reset of everything we've covered so far. It's so dang tough to dive all the way down into the implications of Jesus' individual teachings in the sermon on the mount without losing track of where we are in the big picture (this isn't a bad thing, it's just the nature of what it takes to engage with what Jesus is saying deeply). So because of that, we're doing one episode of putting the periscope up to remind ourselves of where all this stuff from Matthew 6 fits into the grand s...

Week 27 - Jesus' Take on the Sinners' Prayer?

This week we're going to put some time into breaking down the Lord's Prayer. Is it possible to recite something so much that it loses it's meaning? This prayer may be a candidate for that, but when you break it down line by line it's pretty easy to see what Jesus is really driving at here and I think it's the centerpiece of the whole Sermon on the Mount.

Week 26 gets even more personal...

...because Jesus keeps getting more and more in our business as the Sermon on the Mount goes along. We've got more than a chapter to go with this tone from the text and this level of intensity, then we get back to some history/big-picture stuff.

I'm having so much fun processing this together, and thanks for supporting this kind of Internetting.

Week 25 has us finally moving on from chapter 5 and...

...into the just as difficult, if not more difficult, content in chapter 6 of Matthew. Honestly, this chunk of the book is the most challenging stuff in maybe the entire Bible, but I'm having a lot of fun with it anyway.

Being locked down in my house can get drab, but I'm grateful for my family and for the opportunity to connect with you every day. I really do look forward to jumping on the microphone and putting this together with you in mind. Thanks!

Week 24 continues to be challenging

We're in a part of the Bible that's meant to demonstrate the beauty of what God built with his law, and to demonstrate our inability to do it. It seems counter-intuitive that this would be a good thing, but it is. Let's dig into it even though it's hard and weird.

Thanks for being here and for being the people who make this thing happen every day.

Week 23 - You've heard it said, but I tell you...

Get used to this phrase amigos, because it's going to happen A LOT over the next two weeks as Jesus continues to flesh out what the thing is with the fulfillment of the law.

I hope you're healthy, I hope you're in good spirits, and I'm literally praying for all of you this week.

Week 22 Is the Weirdest Week Yet...

...mostly because we're all locked in our houses, but also because we're talking about the intricacies of the Old Testament sacrificial system.

I know things are weird right now, but...

...let's double-down on thinking about the stuff we talk about. It's not esoteric religious abstraction, it's rubber-meets-the-road important in a time like this.

Jesus is landing the plane on part one of the Sermon on the Mount, and in doing so, he uses two very important metaphors that require a little bit o' thinkin' to figure out the manner in which he's employing them.

Last Conversation on the Beatitudes

The ability to assess something is earned, and maybe we're not top-notch seminary professors, but we've still put in the work to position ourselves to have a take on what the Beatitudes mean in whole. So we're landing the plane on that in 0091, and getting on to all that the Beatitudes are setting up.
