...how the people of Susa and the Jews were feeling when Esther and Mordechai's edict went out. It was a violent solution to a violent problem, and it makes sense that it would give us pause so far removed from the situation and given the playful tone of the book, but for the people who were there, the counter-edict was unambiguously celebrated as a great turn of events. We'll think that through this week.

We're getting into the part where it all pays off this week. The cultural setting for the Book of Esther from inside and outside of the Bible is basically in place pending a bit more extra Biblical history and a quick rounding out of the stuff we've been looking at in Ezra and Nehemiah.
