History put Darius in a position where he had to help the Jews

Super interesting material this week about how the unfolding of the Persian Empire providentially set up the Jews for success in rebuilding Jerusalem.

A little bit of Ezra, a little bit of Nehemiah, a little bit of Daniel, and a little bit more Persia...

... and then we're going to be nice and situated for Esther. I think Ezra and Nehemiah are fascinating and I'm glad we have an excuse to take a few days to look at them.

Ezra and Nehemiah are next in our run up to Esther

I'm taking my sweet time setting the stage for this story and I hope you're having fun with it too!

I'm grateful to you!

Now Things Take a Turn For the Grosser

Our friend Herodotus is filling in some historical details that may require you to excuse the kids for a minute. The family tree of the kings of Persia isn't simply and it isn't tidy.

How Did We End Up in Persia?

The story behind how a Jewish lady became Queen of the greatest empire the world had ever seen is going to take a minute to tell. This week we dig into the beginnings of that.

BONUS EPISODE! BONUS EPISODE!

And this one is going to be important because I'll be referencing back to it a lot moving forward. It's about maps and it's fun. Also, you aren't being charged for this one single episode, I just wanted to make sure you saw it, so I made this un-charged post to let you know.
Thanks!

Season Three Is Underway

And it's about the book of Esther. HOWEVER, Esther is happening in one of the strangest and most turbulent times in the history of ever, and we're going to take some time to get oriented on the front end, which is going to be delightful IMO.

Excited to finally be here.

GREAT. JOB.

You just leveled up your entire Bible game and so did I. This week we'll finish out the last two weeks of season 2 of this podcast where we've gone through the whole Bible one book per day until we finished. Then starting on Monday, we are in to season three and the book of Esther (well, we're into the series, it's going to take some serious setup before we make it to the text of the book itself).

Seriously, this was awesome for me, and I hope you got a ton out of it. Thank you. Season...

You know who we haven't heard from in FOREVER?

Peter and John. They've been laying low since the middle of Acts, but now we're getting a very personal look at what they've been up to and their thoughts.
Okay, let me amend that last statement, they haven't been laying low; they've been doing all sorts of interesting things, but we've been following Paul.
Both their personalities come through so clearly in their books. I love it.
Enjoy!

PAUL GETS PERSONAL THIS WEEK

Well, he was pretty personal last week too, but this week we're going to finish out his personal letters, and that last one has big implications even though it's short. I'm learning so much, and I hope you're getting a lot out of this too.

You are why this podcast exists. Thanks you.

Rounding out Paul's letters to churches this week...

... unless he wrote Hebrews but didn't sign it. In that case we'll round out Paul's letters to churches next week after we get done with his personal letters.
Either way, these are center cut Christian theology and a ton of fun!

Paul is taking the baton for now

We are entering what is, far and away, the longest stretch of consecutive books written by the same author in the entire Bible. We are going to be spending a lot of time with him over the next few weeks and I think we're ready to appreciate and understand what his books are doing.

I'm excited for it.

Hardest. Episode. Ever.

After what we just did together, it was so tough to boil Matthew down to just one conversation. I'm glad we were able to sneak in those other 800 episodes on Matthew we did last season so we could begin to give this sweet sweet masterpiece at least a fraction of the treatment it deserves.

Home stretch on the...

... Old Testament. I'm working on Matthew and Mark right now and I'm reminded of how jarring it is to turn the page from Malachi to Matthew. So much history happens in between there. Also, I'm reminded as we finish up this section how much the Old Testament begs for a New Testament.

I just finished the Old Testament...

...and I have some thoughts about this experience I'd like to talk about together. I know you still have five books to go, but I'm beginning my work on the New Testament tomorrow and it seemed like a bonus episode was merited here.

Normally, there is no charge to the patrons for bonus episodes (obviously), but I've been so engrossed in this season of the podcast that I forgot to make a charged post for the first week of the month this month, so I'm going to do that here. That will chang...

I can't believe how much of this stuff...

....I didn't know. I've read the Bible a lot and thought about it a lot, but this process has been humbling. There's just so much more for me to learn about this.
More minor prophets this week. It's such good stuff.

Wisdom and Prophets

We wrap up the wisdom literature section of the Old Testament and get moving on the major Prophets this week. I'm excited to connect the dots together between those Prophets and where they happen in the story.

So long....

.... Old Testament historical books. We finish that section and move into the wisdom books this week, but not before we get into and out of exile in Ezra, Nehemiah and Esther.
I love doing this. Thanks for making it happen.

This may require a bonus episode

There's just so much! This has already been the most fruitful journey through the Old Testament I've ever experienced, but it's not because of anything I've done or I know, it's because of the way this format forces me to consume so much Bible at once attentively and with an eye for connections and structure. I'm discovering I have even more to learn about The Bible than I thought, and looking at the Old Testament this way is having an effect on my process of faith that's probably a bit too c...

I Forgot to Hit the Publish Button Last Week...

...so here's my little "welcome to the new series" post that was supposed to appear last Monday the 2nd.

I'm crazy excited to launch this new series where we're going to go over the whole Bible (be it very quickly). It's been an enjoyable challenge to figure out how to cover so much so quickly while throwing tons of emphasis at the main point of each book. Even as I've finished up the first five books, I find I'm still fine-tuning certain details, and I'm going to give myself permissi...

Week 2 of the whole Bible

Thank you! Because you make this podcast happen, you're forcing me to understand the Old Testament better than I ever have, and I love it. I hope you're having fun and it's all hanging together for you too.

And now to Matthew's closing verses

Jesus and Matthew are both assuming the reader has seen enough to respond to direction from Jesus here at the end of this book.
Don't forget we've got another full week of Matthew being released this weekend!

So much to get in....

.... so little time :) Nah, seriously though we're going to round out Matthew in style this week and next. Please keep an eye out for 5 extra episodes that will drop on the last 2 days of the month. This series needed an epilog, and those last 5 episodes are where we're going to get that in.

Rounding out the theme of witnesses in Matthew

The story the guards were told to circulate takes us to some very interesting places. We'll talk about that this week and the 2nd to last seen in the book of Matthew.

Here's that catchy song from the end of yesterday's episode

It's an homage to a famous song designed to help teenagers learn the days of the week, and I think it might make a great ringtone.

Thanks for liking this weird podcast.

Okay, nooooooow were doing resurrection week and it's...

... the best. This is great stuff because of what's in this chapter itself but even more so because of how it reframes all the amazing-if-true stuff that's happened in the last 27 chapters of Matthew.
Let's do this!

Cool new art!

This week we're changing up the art for the podcast. Obviously you won't be able to hear these changes because the content will stay the same, but I think this stuff looks way cooler. Hope you like it too.
We've got Kingdom values vs. World values again this week as the Pharisees make one more bid to control the narrative.
Should be fun.
