Announcing a livestream!

During and after the last, spontaneous livestream people were asking for the next one - so I have scheduled it.

It's gonna take place on 15th of June on my YouTube channel ( http://youtube.com/unfa000 ) between 20:00 and 23:00 Eastern European Time.

See ya!

A spontaneous livestream has occured

Yesterday I was hanging out with Combustible Lemonade - and we started a livestream.

It has turned into a more-than-3-hour party with people who came in to ask questions, hang out and say hi.

It's a new and exciting experience to me. I have tried some livestreaming before but I tried that alone and doing it with a friend feels much better - also I didn't expect anyone to show up, but at peak there were 20+ people watching, around 15 people have probably stayed there for at least 2 ...

URI#06 Iterative refinement - taking your music to the next level

Have you ever wondered how the heck do other producers release so polished and well-sounding tracks, while you struggle to make anything that sounds half-decent?

Well this video probably won't give you a satisfying answer - but it might help you get on the right track for growth.

I believe great music doesn't grow on trees and it always requires a lot of effort to create something that others will want to listen to again and again. No matter how simple it might appear to b...

UV#24 Mastering an EDM single with Ardour, Calf and EQ10Q

I was asked to master a track. In this video you'll see how I did that.

Here's the final release: https://youtu.be/p-CHTSHggVU

I also talk about some ideas that I consider important in mastering regarding using various types of processing and also - how loud I like to make my masters and why.

I don't think I've shown my absolute best, I guess another video about mastering is due - this time about mastering ...

400 Soundcloud followers!

Yay, another milestone!
I've uploaded my album "Suppressed" to Soundcloud finally.
This event was a good opportunity to do it.

Enjoy the music :)

Making of the video for "Suppressed" (and why it took so long)

As you may know from the previous post. I wanted to do something beautiful and animated to put my album "Suppressed" on YouTube.

So I decided to do two things:

1. Create a continuous mix of the tracks, adding some freshness to the sound and how the tracks play (and overlap) together. I had some ideas how I'd play the tracks in a DJ set, where I'd want to have transitions etc.

2. Create an animated visualizer based on the original cover art to accompany the music - since it's  ...

Suppressed - full album mix

I initially wanted to release this in December 2017. However it turned out I can't do it so fast. I didn't want to just concatenate all tracks of the album, add a static cover art and slap it on YouTube. That'd be cheap and I felt wouldn't do justice to this album's music and cover design. So much effort went into both the sound and the cover image, I knew the video version has to be something on par.

In the next post I'll write more about the process of creating this video and what chall...

URI#05 Problems with MIDI in Ardour 5.12

Here's a quickly done (only one evening, yay!) rambly video.

I wanted to talk about problems that I've encountered while working with MIDI sequencing in Ardour 5.12.

I also talk about other random stuff, so it's  more relaxed, causal video.
I think the ending turned out pretty funny.

I hope there's some useful information here - I wanted to warn the users and let the developers know what currently bugs me the most about Ardour's MIDI workflow.

UV#23 Track breakdown: "Void" (WIP)

In this video I take apart a recent project that I've made.

In most unfa vlog videos I'm making something as you watch - here I take a different approach and dissect something I have created off-screen.

The good thing is that this video is way shorter, and hopefully more efficient with the information, because all the mistakes, and experimentation happened before I recorded it. That can also be a downside.
Let's see how will it go. I have another track breakdown video coming up  ...

URI#04 LMMS 1.2 -vs- Ardour 5.12

Many people ask me what should they learn - Ardour or LMMS?
As I was stuck in a traffic jam I decided to use that time to tell you about that. I have many years of experience working with both programs so I feel qualified to help you decide which one is for you.

As a summary and expansion of the information presented in the video, I've put together a spreadsheet with a detailed comparison between the two programs. You can download it from this post, or follow a link in the YouTube vide...

Here's what I've been working on today.
I guess the vocal "synth" is worth a separate video tutorial.
Once I made that I made the kick sound very psychedelic aswell.

The Ardour 5 session is available for download - so you can remix this!

I started an ominous drum&bass track, with sparse sounds and nice breakbeats. 100% synthesized with ZynAddSubFX in Ardour 5.

I've recorded a very quick video (no editing!) to break the session down for you and highlight what I found interesting i this project. Feel free to download the Ardour 5 session and mess with it.

UV#22 Track from scratch with Zyn-Fusion and Ardour

In this video I make a chilled EDM track, synthesizing all sounds with ZynAddSubFX as I go (which is the usual way I work with electronic music).

Timestamps are in the YouTube description.

The download link for the complete Ardour session is there too, but I mirrored it here on Patreon too.

Enjoy!

I asked Mark McCurry about Zyn-Fusion for Android

A few days ago I wrote an e-mail to the creator of Zyn-Fusion, regarding the possibility to create an Android version of that mighty single-window ZynAddSubFX interface. It'd make it available on phones and tablets. I was quite surprised with what he told me. I thought you might want to read that too, so I asked him if I can publish our e-mails, and he kindly approved that. I interleaved our quot...

I am never going to run out of coffee!

We did it! We've touched $25/mo!
It is starting to get serious!

I have 2 captured videos waiting to be edited, one blog post with answers from Mark McCurry about Zyn-Fusion on Android waiting to be formatted and Ardour Guide video series in the writing currently (I have like 2 episodes pretty well laid out and 3 other more or less sketched out).

BTW - this photo is no stock, it's my daily dose of caffeine at work. Hopefully we can gently shift that coffee mug away from graphic d...

Track preview: "User Error" 2018-02-28

Here's a super quick one for you. I've been making this fro two evenings.
I might be in trouble doing so with Ardour 6, which is unstable and said to break existing projects.

But it you'll promise not to do any serious work that you'd be hurt to loose (like I did), download it and mess with this track:

You'll also need Calf plugins (possibly in the Git version):

Track preview: Puke 2018-02-15

I've been listening to a lot of Skrillex today, I felt inspired to try out some ideas I got off of that.

And here's what I've created during the evening with Zyn-Fusion and Ardour 6.

I found a few bugs - fro example Ardour 6 adds some MIDI notes when I save, which was a bit annoying, but also created some cool accidents that I ended up using in the composition.

If you're going to download this session, you might need to fix some problems.

Enjoy some heavy dubstep!

I expand on the subject covered in UV#20 - talking about limiting, parallel compression, sidechain compression, deessing and multiband compression. I also cover some technical details related to the compression like what is peak and RMS measurement. Some sound demonstrations too.

I must say I like editing videos with Kdenlive more and more.

I have interviewed Mark McCurry, the maintainer of ZynAddSubFX

If you know me, you know ZynAddSubFX is my favorite software synthesizer. I have made entire albums with only it. It's the most powerful open-source synthesizer in existance - and also I believe - one of the most powerful synthesizers period.

Mark McCurry has taken over ZynAddSubFX, after years of stalled development, and he has done amazing things with it. Both under the hood and in terms of UI development, building the new single-window interface.

The new "Zyn-Fusion" interface h...

UV#20 Compression for beginners!

I've decided to steer myself towards making shorter, more focused videos to make it easier to digest and find the content you want.
I guess in 2-hour videos a lot of the great stuff will remain undiscovered and also hard to digest in one chunk. I've done some of that, so let's try cutting it down now :)

Another unfa vlog video - this time using Zyn-Fusion, the new ZynAddSubFX interface. I demonstrate FM synthesis, automation with Zyn-Fusion's Macro Learn and multiband processing in Ardour with Pin Connection - a powerful feature that allows complex signal routings without using additional audio buses!

Learning Kdenlive

If you've ever tried it, you know that open-source video editing is a tough subject. It's hard to find a tool that will be feature-full and stable. There are many applications, but only a few that can really cut it (pun intended) for complex projects.

I used Blender's Video Sequence Editor for many years to make my videos, however it has some issues that are probably not going to be fixed in near future, because Blender's development is focused in another areas. So I've finally decided to...
