Locked in - Exclusive Patreon comic

A lot of ideas intersected in this one!

The Fermi Paradox of course: where is everyone in the universe?

The problem with light speed: in that once you start going faster than light the possibility of time travel exists, something which isn't covered in science fiction as often as you might think, although there are some excellent...

Huge (tho very quiet) progress!

Just smashed the halfway point on storyboarding (or thumb-nailing?) the Bad Space graphic novel. At nearly 100 pages, it looks like we’re aiming for a final book at about 200 pages.

I plan to finish the storyboarding this month, and then begin drawing the pages shortly after.

It’s heeeeere…

The book is in the post, Baddies!

My publisher has spent the day mailing out hundreds and will start on more tomorrow!

The video above was only just sent to me. I haven’t seen it myself, so some of you may get your hands on it even before I do!

Meanwhile, Ive started to wind down my day job to less hours for the next three months until I go full time on the comics.

That does give me more time for Bad Space: I’m using that to focus on thumb-nailing the graphic nove...

Big news for Bad Space

It’s official Baddies: I’m going to take a minimum six months off my day job to work on the Bad Space graphic novel.

I applied for (and got!) a grant, and combined with my Patreon, it should be do-able.

The script to the story is complete. So as soon as I sort out dates to finish my job, I’ll start drawing, and posting pages here.

Juggling these comics with my work for the past three years has been...

Dark Eve

Inspired by one of the legends of science fiction. Including a couple of exclusive panels just for you.

Originally this entire comic was going to be an exclusive Patreon comic, but my publisher is hassling me to share comics to help with book sales, so normal scheduling will return with my next comic. Apologies for the delay!

Also, exciting Bad Space news coming. I’ll update you very soon!

A stitch in time

Hey Baddies - I’m about a week away from a fresh comic: the hold-up has been trying to get some of the art done to my satisfaction. Sometimes the panels fight me!

Above are a few pieces that have ended up on the editing room floor. And below is one that hasn’t. Bit of a gruesome, goth vibe going on for this one.

Anyway, we’re getting there.

Meanwhile the book is a...

SNEAK PEEK!

Hey Baddies - Very exciting news!

Preorders for the book: BAD SPACE VOLUME 1 open May 6/7!

I will post all the details here the moment it goes live, to make sure you have first access.

There will be two editions - a softback version and a hardback version. They are going to be absolutely gorgeous and cram-packed with bleak comic goodness: at about 300 pages.

It’s been such a long road to get this into book form, I’m just thrilled it’s finally hap...

Into the Oort

New comic up.

I really wanted to do a ghost story, but within a technological framework. And I wanted to set it in the Oort Cloud, because there’s something spooky to me about being so far from home. Apart from that though, I had no idea where it would go, so I hope you enjoy.

Above - I took some thumbnails while drawing one of the panels - the quick animation here is the result.

Ashes in our Mouth

This story is inspired by a number of true events that have been knocking around my skull: in particular, that a solar flare really did nearly cause a nuclear war in 1967. And the second was that in the sixties, nuclear winter was an unknown potential consequence of nuclear war - was in fact science fiction, from their point of view. Something about that tickled my fancy, particularly as it gave me the opportunity to explore one of my favourite themes - Soviet space his...

Back to the sixties

I freaking love doing research for Bad Space Stories, I just discover such gruesome stuff - and Soviet history, in particularly, is hairy AF.

Which, in case you're wondering, is just a little tease for my next comic - which should be out in a week or so.

And yeah, it is taking longer than usual, because its nearly twice as long as one of my usual stories! This is the joy of doing comics just for you guys - I can create longer, more in-depth work.

Been working on cover concepts for the Bad Space book. None of these have made the cut, but it's real fun exploring the possibilities.

Bad Space - BOOKED

In some great news to kick off 2025 - Bad Space is going to print this year!

I can’t say too much more yet, but we finally have a publisher I like, and it looks like we will have it on the shelves mid this year.

To keep the length manageable, it’s likely we will need to cull a few stories, so do let me know if there’s any of my comics you absolutely must see in the comments below, and I will do my best to make sure they make the grade.

Sleep of Prometheus

Exclusive comic for you, Spacers.

I sometimes find the tension between the universe we live in and the cages we construct for ourselves a little confronting. I just wanted to explore that in this shorter piece.

Up next, we get into some gnarly hard sci-fi - just finishing up the script now!

I'm releasing this comic on Instagram as well. But you get the full version, with five more panels. I'm not gonna lie, I like this long version a lot more.

Ozymandias Redux

My very first Bad Space comic was The Billionaire. I was still finding my style when I drew this story and as such, of all my comics, the art in these panels doesn’t quite match the tone of everything else that has followed.

So on a whim, recently I updated the art. And here it is, just to tide you through while I get my latest story wrapped up.

And my next comic is something new View Post

Just the art

I was pretty pleased with the way some of these pictures came out for my latest story, so I just wanted to show you how they looked clean.

I do build the artwork with the text boxes in mind, but occasionally I still prefer the originals by themselves.

Next up: a Patreon-exclusive comic just for you!

Here's a quick share of some artwork that didn’t quite make the grade for my last comic, Weeds of Earth.

Under the Ice

New comic up! Honestly, I’ve been dying to do some stuff on one of the ice moons for ages. And this is just the tip of the iceberg (sorry!): I also want to visit Triton, Europa and, albeit the rather less icy, Io, in future as well.

Anyway, this story is set on Enceladus, and no sooner did I start drawing it than 2024-09-26 07:51:33 +0000 UTC View Post

Hey Spacers!

Huge shout out to new supporters- and existing ones. Your backing literally makes these comics possible.

As you may be aware, to make Bad Space more sustainable long term (hopefully), from now on, every second comic I do will be available only on Patreon.

This rule will be a little flexible as I experiment, but overall I really hope you enjoy this reciprocation for your support.

The chances of anything coming from Mars...

Boy that was the most fun I’ve had drawing one of these comics in a while! I re-read the book to make sure I didn’t miss anything- and even street-viewed the original locations.

I still remember the thrill of hearing the album when I was a kid, and coming back to it again, and to the book, to create this tribute comic, was so satisfying.

My plan was to tell a story that didn’t tak...

The Newer Prometheus

Whoop! There we go, the promised second part of my AI comic.

I’ve always found the idea of AI taking over the world faintly ridiculous: it’s classic othering. For one thing it’s just the same old fear of other tribes, other countries and aliens - who clearly want what we have!

But AI won’t be an intelligence built on the back of evolution, with all its freight of instinct. Instead it will be something that thinks a bit differently than us.

So that was the ba...

Hey Spacers

Just a quick update, so you don’t think I’ve fallen off the planet!

I’m in the process of drawing a new comic - and just this week started writing another one that I’m really excited about. It’s riffing off HG Wells’ War Of The Worlds, and I can’t stop thinking about it. I’ve been trying to figure out a way to draw this for so long - and I finally I found a way in!

Honestly this story has been so pivotal to me, ever since I f...

Hell and Back - video

Hey Spacers!

Thought you might enjoy the first look at this short film I’ve put together, based on one of my comics, Hell and Back.

It needs a little bit more clean up before I’ll share it with the world - but I’m pretty happy with where we got it to, and it was lots of fun to do!

The song of the tech bros

As you know, if you read my posts, I've been working on a few projects lately, which is why my comics have been on the back burner for the past few months. However the debate around AI - or lack of one, really, got me thinking. And this is the result.

I have a second companion piece planned as well. AI is a complicated issue and I have another -completely different- take on how this could ...
