Update to the monthly Patreon Name Color + Glow

Rolled out the monthly Patreon name color + glow options 16 months ago, so I'm starting to run out of good color options at this point. So going forward, I'll start experimenting with gradients colors.
Here's a quick preview of how it'll look, the gradient also makes it really fun to experiment with different glows.

July Economic Update

Just finished updating the numbers for July, so got the economic update ready.

As I mentioned last month, July was an extra hard month due to a yearly 3k bookkeeping bill, and we sadly did end up in the red with the final result being a bit over 1,2k in the red leaving the overall yearly result around 1k in the red.
Luckily, I was able to get my twice a year sale tax return last month with helped keeping everything afloat. But we are still in the red for the year overall, so I need some good months for the game to start rebuilding that economic buffer, so all support is greatly appreciated!

Sales for July aren't quite as high as I would like them, but I hope the remainder of the month can make up for it. With the change to stripe this month, less money will also go to PayPal fees, which will also help.

So the economic situation still isn't good, but I'll be working hard to keep everything going! And to all of you backing the Patreon, thanks a lot for the support, Patreon backers really have been the backbone of keeping the game afloat for the last couple of year, so I can't thank you all enough!

New Avatar Content Idea

With nearly all avatars having their alt. version set, I've been working with TaiOni to find a new type of content they can work on once the game won't be needing as many alt. versions, and would like to hear what you all think of what we ended up with, and if it's something you would like to see in the game.

So the idea is to add a new cosmetic item that can be used freely with any avatars (kinda like backgrounds) and is unlocked using the ticket system. The idea is to have them feature companions or themed items, that you can use together with your avatars. Content displayed at the top would be behind the avatars, while the ones at the bottom will be in front.
I've added several ideas of what these can look like to this post, and would love to hear what you think of them, and any suggestions/feedback you might have to them and the concept in general.

Quick Status Update

Didn't find the time to post this last week, but wanted to let you all know that the July month looks to have ended in the positive economic wise, thanks to the support from all of and I managed to move up a tax return from August to July, as the challenge was due to a yearly bill, we should hopefully be back to smooth sailing for the rest of the year.

In other news, I'm also taking this week off (and maybe a couple in the start of the next one) as I'm biking from Copenhagen to Aarhus this week. I'll probably still be checking emote requests and messages in the evening, but won't be any new releases in the game this week.
If you want to follow the trip, I'm sharing it over on my bluesky https://bsky.app/profile/egerod.bsky.social =)

But I'll be back next week with a more detailed economic update and new AMQ content.

Monetization Update

As I mentioned earlier this week in the economic update, I've been thinking of changing the payments in-game to be in Euros instead of US Dollars. Wanted to give you all an update on what I've found out and the changes I'll most likely roll out in the coming week.

So after running the numbers and checking different options, I've found two changes to the in-game payments I'll most likely roll out in the next week: Charging in EUR (while displaying still displaying the estimated converted price in USD) and switching payments to Stripe from PayPal.

First of the reason to switch to EUR is to solve a challenge that game has always, the game have gotten USD in, but the biggest of the bills are in DKK (the Danish currency). This has caused the exchange rate of USD to DKK to have an impact on the final earnings, which is great when USD have a high value, but causes issues when it's low. As an example, I'm earning roughly 10% less per Dollar earned today compared to at the start of the year, simply due to the drop in the USD value.
In comparison, EUR always have a fixed exchange rate to DKK, so by switching to EUR I'll eliminate the exchange uncertainty, with I strongly prefer.
Combined to the change to Stripe, I'll also get reduced fee for sales in EUR from the EU, with no equal reductions for USD (on either payment platforms).

As for Stripe, for those that don't know it, it's another large online payment provider, but compared to PayPal you don't need to create an account, and can pay with card and digital wallets (Apple Pay, Google Pay etc.).
But from the economic side of things, Stripe has lower fees, especially for EU transactions and when withdrawing the money. So after running the numbers, it's a no-brainer to switch to Stripe, and actually something I've been considering for some time.

The change to EUR will mean that the prices in-game will be adjusted. I probably won't use the current USD to EUR exchange rate for this, as the USD value is rather low right now, and I want to get the effective prices in DKK closer to what they were at the start of the year. So I'll be using an older exchange rate of 1 USD = 0.94 EUR, and then adjust the prices to be a clean number. So this will result in a slight price increase but this has probably been needed for some time, as I haven't updated the prices since they were introduced 5 years ago.
I'll list the new planned prices for ticket packs below, as for the Avatar Drive I'll probably just change it to 600 EUR.

1 Ticket: 1 EUR
12 Pack: 9.99 EUR
26 Pack: 18.99 EUR
70 Pack: 46.99 EUR
150 Pack: 93.99 EUR
42 Pack (Sale): 18.99 EUR
110 Pack (Getting Started): 46.99 EUR

That's it for these planned changes, I do hope to be able to roll them out with the next patch this week.
If you have any input, suggestions or feedback on these changes I would love to hear them, the changes aren't completely set in stone yet, and I'm always open to suggestions =)

June Economic Update

This is a long one, so tl;dr:
June ended pretty in the red, eating almost all the buffer from the past months this year. July got a big (3K USD) yearly bill coming up, so I'm aiming for a strong July result, and all support is greatly appreciated.
Also considering changing payments in-game to euros, to avoid loses caused by the fall in the US dollar value.

The numbers are in for June, and they're sadly, but expected in the red.

Overall, June ended a bit over 2k USD in the red, sending the overall yearly result down to nearly 0 (it's roughly around 300 USD in the positive).

I was expecting June to be a very bad month, due to the few releases during it and the fact it didn't have any ticket sale. Seeing the sale numbers during the month, I was actually expecting the result to be worse, so I'm glad to see the yearly result still staying in the positive, this was mainly thanks to the support from all of you here on Patreon, so I can't thank you all enough for all the support!

The result for June does mean that we need a good result for July, as the buffer we had rebuilt over the year is gone, so I'll be aiming for ending all remaining of the year in the green.

Especially for July, I need it to end well, as I got a yearly bill (it's the bookkeeping cost for a yearly report I need to create and submit to the Danish tax system, so not something I can avoid >.<) of around 3k USD that needs to be paid this month. Was hoping this bill would first come later this year, so there would be more time to rebuild the buffer, but that sadly wasn't the case.
So any support any of you will be able to share during July will be greatly appreciated, as another red month would mean the game would have close to not economic buffer left.

One thing that also been effecting the economics of the game negatively is the drop in the US dollar's value. As I get all payments in USD, but most of my major expenses are in Danish Krone (which can't really be avoided as I'm based in Denmark, so my bank is Danish), the drop in the USD value means that I roughly earn 10% less, simply due to the conversion.
So I have been considering changing the payments in-game to euros (not sure if I'll be able to do the same here on Patreon), as the euro always got the same conversion rate to the Danish Krone.

That's it for this update, hoping I can share a more positive one with you all next month!

June Developer Update

I'm back rejuvenated from vacation.
It's been my first long traveling vacation since 2018, so it was great to finally travel for real again. But I'm also glad to back and looking forward to continuing development of the game!

So because of the vacation there haven't been many updates to the game this month, the one I did at the start of the month I also kept simple, to avoid anything breaking while I was gone.

To start out, I want to get the next avatar added to the Nexus, before looking at shooting out more quick quality updates and bug fixes over summer. Haven't gotten as many Nexus avatars out as I was hoping, but really looking to this one, as she'll have a really fun and interesting ability.

In the longer term, I hope to start work on localization for the game towards the end of summer. This will be to add language support to the game for more than just English, to help expand the player base, and allow players to play in their native language.
But this will first be after I've gotten several quality updates out, so I'll share more details about this in a later update.

That's all for this quick update, looking forward to sharing all the new content with you all next month!

May Economic Update

Got the numbers in for May, so here's the economic update for the month!

The result for May was around 300 USD in the red, which is a decent result for May, which is usual not the best months for sale. This result is most likely due to the mid-season sale I ran during the month, but also because there wasn't that many art expenses due to have the schedule for these lined.
So May ending with only 300 USD in the negative isn't too bad, and overall it still keeps the year so far 2500 USD in the positive. I was hoping May would end up in the positive, as there isn't much content planned for June, so I expect it to also end up in the red, sadly. But with the current yearly result, we should still hopefully stay in the positive overall, and be able to bounce back in July when the summer skins go on sale.

That's it for this month update, thanks for all the support, and hopefully we can soon turn those red results green again!

May Developer Update

A bit delayed, but here's the developer update for May!

Finally got the multiplayer Nexus saving logic finished, and after a bit of a bumpy start that needed a couple of bug fixes, the system appears to fully work now!
Besides that, I've returned to working on the feature/bug backlog, and will probably mainly focus on that over the summer months. So expect a lot of smaller patch to be released over summer.

For June, it will also be away for 2 weeks for a family vacation. But to make sure server or account issues are handled during this time (as I'll probably be hard to reach during the vacation), I'll be bringing Sheepy back in for the weeks to keep an eye on it.

I am also hoping to release the next Nexus avatar soon, but I'll be waiting until after the vacation, as the next one planned will have a rather unique ability. I might be able to fit it in before I leave, but I won't have time for enough testing or any follow-up bug fixes.
But Nexus player can look forward to a fun new avatar towards the end of the month or start of July!

That's it for this time, expect the economic update for May one of the coming days, just need to finish getting the numbers updated.

April Economic Update

Finally got the numbers in for April, a bit later than usual, but was busy with getting patch 0.26 ready for release, so didn't have time to go over the numbers before today.

April ended in the green, with a bit over 1000 USD in the positive, making up for the loss in March.
It's a bit lower than I was hoping for, as April sales usually are higher, but we're still a nice 3K into the green for 2025 and May sales are looking higher than usual, so the weak April sales shouldn't be an issue.

April Developer Update

April us drawing to a close, so it's for this month developer update!

Haven't been that many patches this month, partially because I took a couple of days off during Easter (really needed that break), but mainly because I've been looking at finally getting Nexus multiplayer saving added.
This is a feature that honestly should have been added ages ago, and definitely once endless mode was added, but it sadly ended up in limbo. Originally the plan was for Sheepy to look at it, but it never really got off the ground, then Sheepy stopped, leaving the feature kinda stuck.
So as I've finished most of the other larger updates I want out before summer, this felt like a good time to pick it up, so I went for it.
The feature itself is nearly done, still working on the last of the UI for it, and the last bit of load logic, but it should hopefully be ready to go live next week!
After that, I'll probably be returning to looking at the minor improvements/bug-fixes requested/reported by all of you before starting on the next larger update.

That's it for this update, not much on the patch front this month, but hope to share a lot with you all next month!

March Economic Update

Got the numbers in for March, so here's this month Economic update.

March ended up a bit over 1000 USD in the red, making it the first month in the negative of the year.
I was expecting the month not to be too strong, as it haven't had any major skin releases and only had the end of the AMQ Awards sale. I am still a bit sad to see it dip into the red, but with the Spring skins coming out this month, it should hopefully be back to positive numbers for April.
The year is also still around 2000 USD in the positive, so I'm not too nervous about this March ending up in the red.

That's it for this update, looking forward to hopefully share some green numbers with you all in the next one!

March Developer Update

Hi everyone, glad to finally be back with another developer update!
I missed last month's as I spent the last week of the month sick, so wanted to focus on getting some patches out first once I was fresh again.

So since last update, the new Themed Quiz of the Day have been released, and I've done a couple of bug fixing + minor improvement patches.

The Themed Quiz of the Day development ended up taking longer than expected, which was the reason for the lack of patches doing the first couple of months of the year.
This was mainly due to the challenge of adding support for teams in the mode, as I had to combine two different systems, the slot system and team system, which I originally thought would be rather straight forward, but turned out to be surprisingly complex.
On the technical side of things, the slot system is what calculate what players to show in what slots. This is extra complex in Quiz of the Day, as it also have to manage different multiple different views, due to some players being hidden by mods (while they validate that they aren't cheating), meaning there have to be a view without them (for most players), and one with them (for the player themselves). All of these views needs to be updated during the quizzes, as more players join, players might get hidden etc.
Now we then add the team system into the mix. This first of all doubled the amount of views, as a view was needed with and without teams (for the toggle), which also needed to be created for every single hidden player view. Next up when a player is hidden, not just them, but the entire team need to be hidden from the scoreboard from the regular view, which causes the order and layout to have to be recalculated, as I can't just move every team one position up, as they might not fit into the next slot, as slots can only show 8 players.
I could continue with more cases, that made this really annoying to do, but think I've done enough tech rambling for this post 😅
Tl;dr: Adding teams to Quiz of the Day was a lot more complex than I was expecting.
With the yesterday patch I cleaned up both the code, making it easier to maintain, and completely redid how the team layouts in slots were done, as this was also causing issues when lobbies had a lot of players. This again turned out to be really complicated, I'll spare you the details, but the code calculating the positions, ended up being over 300 lines long, due to all the edge cases it has to handle >.<

Beside the Themed update, we've had a couple of bug fixing and improvements patches. These are pretty much all requests or reports from the Discords, got a long list of all the suggestions and bugs reported over there. The current plan is to go through the majority of them before I start the next big feature, so expect to see several rapid patches in the coming months as I'm going through the list.

This is pretty much all for this update, keep the eye out for future patches, might be something fun happening on Tuesday.
