Some designs for the gross yucky ear creature in MeatCanyon's EARWAX video. There was a lot of iteration that went into figuring out the functionality of the monster. The final design was eventually given a quick scribbly edit to replace the arms with centipede legs.

Another attempt at doing something quick that started to get away from me. Bit of a messy finish. Had to crop the legs off just to cut the render time down. I have other bigger paintings that I want to prioritize.

Another of the evolving narrative things I did a while back. The idea for these guys is that they ran a spelunking YouTube channel and these images are the only frames salvaged from their recovered camera. Everything else was corrupted.

I have a tendency for drawing dudes in a 3 quarter angle and making the shoulder very prominent. I always like painting shoulders. You can put a lot of nice subtle shifts of hue and value in them

Once it started to take shape I started recording. Mostly what you see is me in the detailing phase. Most of the lighting and forms are established so I'm just focusing on getting things crispy.

With the initial monotone sketch I felt that the design was way too close to the design for the regenerators as they appear in the new remake. Ironically I don't really like the new design that much. I think the skin texture looks sort of rubbery and fake. And I hate the big cartoony teeth and the over-modelled cheek bones. A sketch that I sort of dislike. It went through a whole bunch of changes as I tried to come up with something interesting. Ultimately the whole process felt too manufactured. I think the end result is just about passable.

Another anthological thing I painted a couple of years ago. Was part of the same project as the Family Portrait I posted a few weeks back. Lots of tricky elements to work out with this idea. The background is much more photobash-y than my usual stuff (the floorboards/deck railing). Even so I think this one is my favourite of the bunch.

However! I'm starting to think it might be interesting to turn the weekly WIP roundup into a group show and tell thing. Where you guys can show some of the stuff you're working on too if you want. Decided to record the process of working on the animation frames. It's usually a phase of the painting that gets quite messy and uncertain. It's for sure the one area where my skills are the most amateurish, but I thought it might be interesting to watch as I figure it out

I think this version worked better than the previous attempts for a couple of reasons. For one the environment is pretty understated, made up of a few sparse objects. For another it has the big red herring of the body in the foreground and the moving trail of smoke to distract from the scary corner guy.

Another monster portrait thing. Had no particular idea in mind when starting out, just kept fiddling with the shapes until it started to come together. Initially the head was more abstract. I kept wanting to lean more towards a blockier shape but the more I fiddled the more human the facial proportions became.

I've also added a couple of PSD's and tagged them too! I have to scale them down quite a bit in order to upload them but I've kept the layers separated.
