Patreon Vid: A Very Dirty IBM Server

Taking a look at an IBM System x3650 M2... and it's going to need a lot of help.

I'll eventually have a full video where we'll completely strip down every part of this thing to get it cleaned up, then I'll see if I can get it running.

Early Vid: The Linksys WRT54G

Taking a look at some 2000s Linksys networking gear, namely the famous WRT54G. We'll flash the third-party DD-WRT firmware onto it and see what that can do, as well as setup a wireless-b wifi network.

Should go live on the channel later this week!

Sun PCi II

Because the Sun PCi III wasn't painful enough... a Sun PCi II! This one was manufactured in February 2002 and shipped to Cerritos Community College in California on May 2002.

I'll preemptively pull the CPU for inspection on this one. It's complete in box but was clearly used.

But we'll get that Sun PCi III working first!

Video probably going live on the channel this evening!

SunPCi III Pro Troubleshooting

Trying to figure out what's wrong with the SunPCi III Pro. I think I've narrowed it down to hardware issues.

Nothing works!

Spent the afternoon trying to get the IBM p5 booting from iscsi without luck, so switched over to getting Solaris 8 on the v440 to test the SunPCi 3 with something other than Solaris 10 (filmed that along the way, so hopefully a patreon video about that soon). Way more roadblocks than expected, hopefully I'll be interacting with that SunPCi tomorrow!

Early Vid: Sun Ray Thin Clients Pt.3: Using Windows

Early release of the next Sun Ray installment: using them with Windows.

We'll also look at the SunPCi III Pro. I've been dreading that project, and you'll see why.

Video should go live tomorrow afternoon.

More Token Ring

Slowly acquiring more token ring stuff. Not entirely sure this one will be useful, but I love how the design ties into the original physical IBM token ring connector.

Early Vid: Sun Fire v440

Early access to the channel's next video, going over a Sun Fire v440. We'll also write an "enterprise app" on J2EE 1.4 (from 2003!) and see how it performs on the v440.

Early Access Vid: Unboxing InDesign 1.5 From 2001

Early access for this week's video (will probably go live on YouTube mid-week). Unboxing and installing InDesign 1.5 from 2001, as well as a little bit of discussion about John Warnock, one of Adobe's co-founders.

I can't guarantee I'll always be able to show early videos on here, usually I take it right down to the wire, but I'm ahead this week!

Token Ring Networks

I've been very slowly acquiring stuff to network some older PCs via Token Ring, a competing standard to ethernet that saw a lot of traction in enterprises in the 1980s and early 90s.

Here, we have a complete in-box token ring PCI card from 3Com (a company co-founded by the inventor of ethernet, ironically enough). Eventually, I'll have what we need to do a full network setup and video on it!

Hello!

I'm on a journey to revisit computing before the mid-2000s, usually with an enterprise hardware focus. A lot (most) of us didn't have access to these powerful (at the time) machines, so it's great to have a look at what was running the internet and businesses back then.
