Early Access : Behind the Scenes of 'Back to You' Cut 21
I'm sorry for the late post. Sakamoto here.
This is my dormitory diary entry for December.
I have been able to work at a nice pace this month. Since I had a week off for New Year's, I completely changed the layout of my room. I didn't have a lot of space to put things, so I put up some shelves; it's been fun to see my room evolve to suit me.
I finally saw the One Piece movie recently, although I'm late to the party. I heard rumors that it was pretty out there, and after watc...

Happy New Year!
I'm back home with my parents for New Year's holidays relaxing.
Last year was a busy year for me, so I plan to take it easier this year while striving to improve my art skills.
In less than 3 months, I'll officially enter my second year of work.
Since I started this job in the Summer of last year, a lot of time has passed, but having not had much time to practice art, my in-betweens have yet...

Happy New Year! This is Kim.
Here’s my dormitory diary entry for January.
I’d like to take today to answer the questions you asked me last month.
First, I was surprised by the number of questions you had for me!
Specifically, there were a lot of questions from our supporters over on PATREON. Thank you, everyone, for taking so much interest in plain old me! And also, thank you to our translator, Garrett, for translating all of your questions for me!
Now, let...

Thank you for your support. Kuroda here.
Many apologies for my late post. This is my dormitory diary entry for December.
I recovered enough from COVID to return to work on the 8th. Though, I still have some symptoms, such as a cough.
I wasn't able to do as much work as I did last month. This makes sense, given the frames I missed while I was out sick.
It’s been very frustrating, so I will do my best to TEAR through these drawings next month.
To all of our value...

Many apologies for my late post. Here is my Dormitory Diary Entry for November.
I contracted COVID-19 on the 29th and had to leave early in the middle of work. My studio allowed me to take the entire week off to recover.
I felt horrible for putting more strain on my co-workers. Giving up the cuts I was working on because I wouldn't have met the deadlines was also frustrating. I realized that there’s a ton of room in my workflow t...

This is my diary entry for December
It feels noticeably colder in Tokyo than it was in Osaka.
Every morning it’s taking me longer and longer to get out of bed.
Work is going well though. I feel like I’ve made some solid growth and am drawing about 50% more frames than I used to per month.
My output has been a big source of worry for me, so I’m glad to see a steady rate of improvement.
Back to the grindstone!
Thank you very much for your support!

Sorry for the late post!
December has officially started!
My frame count for November was about 160.
That’s a bit lower compared to last month.
I was in charge of a lot of complicated cuts, which slowed me down a bit, but I’m going to do everything I can to exceed November’s frame count this month!
I took part in a dormitory meet-and-greet on the 4th!
I got to learn about all kinds of informati...

I've noticed that my lips have been feeling really dry lately, as is common this time of year. This is Ura with my dormitory diary entry for December.
Earlier this month, I watched the movie "Slam Dunk." I read the manga in elementary school, and it's still one of my favorites. I remember being super impressed by the detailed portrayal of the characters' emotions during the games and the dynamic, action-packed art style when I was a kid. It still blows my mind to think about how it was ...

Here’s my dormitory diary entry for December.
We’re down to our last month (December) of the year. Recently, I’ve felt like time is passing really quickly.
I had a health check-up the other day. I don’t have my results back yet, but I can already tell that I need to pay more attention to my well-being. Sitting in chairs for long hours isn’t doing any favors for my stamina (which I hardly had any of to start). ...

Hello, Sakamoto here.
This is my dormitory diary entry for December.
I’m finally back to working on internal projects this month which is more comfortable for me. I enjoy doing contact work as well, but life feels more stable and suited to me personally with in-house work.
Until recently I hadn’t been doing much independent study, but I took up a challenge to spend 30 minutes drawing every morning and it’s been a really great experience.
Of course, I have friends...

Hello, this is Kim.
Here’s my dormitory diary entry for December.
December has brought a lot of fun end-of-the-year parties with my co-workers and friends, but it’s still a bit rough since I only have 1 day off.
I’d like to take some time to discuss some stuff I don’t normally get to touch on here.
It is the end of the year, and as a token of my appreciation for your support, I’d like to host a little Q&A with you. Ask me any questions you may have, and I...

Thank you very much for your support.
This is Yamaguchi.
Recently I’ve been feeling a bit sick due to the change in temperature, but I’m mostly fine now.
I’ve kept a pretty good pace at work.
Even so, I’ve still been having trouble getting to 300 frames a month.
I just gotta do more.
Also, this is unrelated, but if you can’t tell by my monthly drawings for these posts, I really like Ryoko-chan (she’s so cute)!
(Ryoko is an original charact...

Yamamoto here!
As we approach the end of November, Fall comes to a close as Winter moves in.
I think I remember saying somewhere that my frame count for this month was around 200? Let's go with that.
I think my goal for the new year is going to be getting above 200 frames consistently!
I got a 2 out of 3 on my key animation test!
The supervisor who looked at my test told me what they thought I did well on and what I nee...

This is Yamamoto.
Sorry for the late post!
December is now in full swing!
I had my key animation test in October which was scary.
For the test, I had to draw layouts and draft out some keyframes; the whole thing made me realize how far I still have to go.
On top of barely making the submission deadline, my line quality was messy and my motion was stiff, so my plan is to practice more and use this as experience for the n...

Apologies for the late update. Here’s my dormitory diary entry for November.
I was chatting with my friend from college recently. We come from different industries but we’re both artists and we waxed about our jobs, illustration, and different shows. After listening to their thoughts on drawing and what they specifically focus on when they draw made me realize some aspects of my own art that I haven’t been giving enough a...

The cold-front is official here so now I’m wrapped up in my HEAVY DUTY BLANKIES!
Winter isn’t my favorite of the seasons, but it's nice because I get to eat ozōni (a traditional Japanese soup) and maybe even see some snow in Tokyo!
Now, for my work-related status report. I’m getting more and more frames out each month and improving a lot!!
It’s extremely hard to adapt to the different jobs sometimes as I have to suppress all of my little drawing quirks, but I know h...

Long time no see. This is Animator Dormitory resident Kimura.
Here we are for another year, already in November. Time moves quickly.
I succeeded in drawing over 200 frames in October. I can see how much my new fellow residents are drawing through these diaries; it’s hard not to feel in a rush to do more myself, but I still plan on going at pace.
I went to one of my senior’s art exhibit the other day. I guess it was their first one. The place was packed and reminded me of...

Hello, this is Ura.
I’m so looking forward to seeing Suzume no Tojimari this month!
Here’s my dormitory diary entry for November.
Suzume no Tojimari will be the first Makoto Shinkai film in 3 years, and boy can I not WAIT to see all of his beautiful imagery again. I’ve been following the movie somewhat closely since the first preview and I’m really excited to watch it.
One of my bucket list goals is to work as a key animator on a big-time movie like this one, h...

Hello, this is Kim.
Here’s my dormitory diary entry for November.
As an in-between animator, I typically use digital software for work. Recently though, I feel that I’ve become too dependent on digital tools and question if I’m losing my actual skills or not.
When you’re doing in-between frames the old fashioned way, there’s no undo button, canvas turning, or even repositioning, so you need to get your lines right the first time, every time. That kind of practice w...

November Dormitory Diary
Thank you very much for your support.
This is Yamaguchi.
It’s now November and the mornings and evenings have become much colder.
Sometimes my hands get so cold that they’re stiff by the time I arrive at work, so I’ve been buying warm drinks from the studio vending machine to keep them warm.
I’ve recently settled into my routine as an in-between animator, so the cuts I’m being assigned are getting more and more complex.
Th...

Here’s my dormitory diary entry for November.
It’s gotten so cold recently that I needed to bust out my duvet. That and, for when it’s genuinely COLD at times like these, I bought a heating pad that I’ve been laying in my futon and it makes it nice and cozy. My hometown was pretty mild weather wise; I’m still shocked at how cold Tokyo gets lol.
At work I’ve been pretty much focused solely on retakes. It’s become muc...
