Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 050c - Loose ends

Brindle was exhausted as he sat in the chair, waiting for the head acolyte to come and speak to him.  The decorations within this tent were more ornate than he had expected.

That stupid Serhmy! This is all his fault!

Cursing under his breath, he turned his head as the tent flap opened, and the woman he was waiting on came in.

Dropping to the ground, he put his forehead into the soft rug his chair was placed on.

He could hear the swish of her robe as she m...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 032 - A dwarven ally

Are you taking it easy, or are you trying to fly faster?  What are your stats?

Kaen had been judging how fast they were going by the land moving beneath them, and it felt like Pammon was covering more ground even with a steady beat of his wings.

I am not trying to fly faster; I just am.  I think the griffons have played a role in this.  In fact, let me see something.

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 050b - Every second counts

Molly read the report that Mary had given her.  After getting halfway through it, she understood why her sister had been shaking with frustration.

“Do they really believe this boy is dead?”

Mary stared at her older sister.  She was older by a few minutes and Mary was never allowed to forget that.

“The advisor is not certain, but none of their actions have revealed any other leads.  You and I both know that if we are not convinced, he will not be...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 031 - Awake at last

“It seems your best still isn’t good enough,” mocked Stioks as he broke the fourth arrow Kaen had just fired at him.  “I would have believed you would be more of a challenge.”

Fear filled Kaen’s heart, and he could feel Pammon’s beating fast as well.

We need to run!  Perhaps Tharnok can buy us time!

Glancing to where Elies and Tharnok were, Kaen was shocked to see both of them gone.

They were alone, facing Stioks and Juthom.

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 050 - The truth

The small amount Max put in James’s mouth was enough to bring some color back to his face and start rejoining the flesh of his open wounds.

“Now, I showed you I am up for keeping you alive.  I need you to tell me if these unskilled actually have skills and why those skills make them dangerous.”

James winced, shaking his head for a moment until he saw Max begin to move his foot near his injured arm again.

“I don’t know! They only tell us a little bit!  The...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 030 - Standing watch

Kaen and Pammon had waited for a while after he had swallowed that wet pack with the spilled potion in it, hoping to see some magical healing taking place.  Nothing had happened like when Kaen, Hess, or anyone else had drunk one of the potions for them.

I’m hungry.  Will you bring that closer to me so I can eat?

Sighing, Kaen pulled out his sword and moved to the burnt carcass of the griffin.  He started hacking pieces of it off and then brought t...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 049 - Just like old times

Max entered the forest, the sun vanishing to the west as he did.  Shadows and darkness filled the night, and Max knew he had to make tracks for whoever was following him.

Bending down, he picked up a branch and cast a fire spell on it, igniting it and making a torch as he walked deeper into the woods.

The sounds from the insects and animals brought back memories of when he had first run from home.  He was scared, wondering if he might die at any moment.  Now that fe...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 029 - When we are the ones hunted

He knew the ground was coming fast, but there was no other option.

Flight burst now!

Pammon grunted, and Kaen knew he was not excited but felt it when it engaged.

[ Flight Burst Activated ]

Kaen felt Pammon’s body surge forward; the speed at which they were dropping, the angle of the approach, the griffons behind them, everything spelled doom if Pammon couldn’t pull off what he needed to.

Both his wings adjusted for the sudden shift in the direction ...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 048 - Time with Caleb

“WHAT THE HELL!”

Max held up his finger and shushed Caleb even though Big D had said this room had wards to prevent eavesdropping.

“Stop yelling and sit down.  Tell me why you are here and how you got here first!” Max said, pulling a chair over and setting it near the one he had pointed at.  “How are my parents and my sister?”

Caleb’s mouth moved, words not coming out as he stood there a moment and then sighed, moving to the chair and plopping down. View Post

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 028 - Hunting griffons

They camped near some trees away from the dwarven border, and Kaen found himself eating another meal of dried meat.  He was tired from a long day in the air, and even though Pammon had offered to find food for him, it was far easier just to chew what was on hand and rest.  Tomorrow was a big day.  He had an idea of where to look for their prey, but they would still have to fly and search through a lot of the mountain areas and hope to get lucky.  If they traveled the wrong...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 027 - An impossible contest

Sedel stood prepared.  A timer would be given and after twenty seconds all targets down would count.  She had a red sash tied over her eyes and Kaen marveled at how calm she seemed to be even though she couldn’t see.

“She has done something like this before, hasn’t she?”

Queleth nodded and flashed a playful smirk.

“She has been the winner for the last ten contests in a row.  There isn’t much you can do to phase her.”

Letting a groan escape,...

Ultimate Level 1 - Chapter 047 - A strange encounter

Max couldn’t help but smile as he put the pants he had just purchased from Aest in storage.  The elf was red in the face, having haggled once again with Max only to find out after he agreed on a price that there was a ten percent discount to apply now.

Still, the deal had been too good to pass up for Max, even without the discount.  A pair of black leather pants gave one point to each Strength, Constitution, and Dexterity.  All for the final price of two gold and thirty...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 026 - An archery contest

Five archers stood near him, three women and two men.  By now, Thistle and Rowan had made it back.  Both were covered in sweat, and it was obvious that they were not excited to miss out on getting a chance to shoot against Kaen.

Queleth had examined his bow and had praised the maker of it.  The detail and strength of it, combined with the magic he knew that lay in it, was amazing.

“I guess we should skip the easy simple shots?” he asked.  “We have a cours...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 025 - City in a forest

Thistle and Rowan stood in awe as they watched Kaen and Pammon take off over the lake that morning, choosing to follow them by air.  Rowan had marked a grove of trees that he said would stand out and be a landmark for where their village was on Kaen’s map.

As Pammon tracked them through the air, Kaen studied the forest they had been flying over and noticed the difference in the trees here versus some of the other forests.

There is magic in these trees growing if I had t...

The female elf spat on the ground as she scowled and pulled the bowstring back more to aim the arrow at Kaen.

“You would be wise to tell us who you are and why you know that language!” she shouted as her male companion turned his head and whistled towards the woods.

Sighing, Kaen felt where Pammon was and knew he needed another minute before his backup would arrive.

“I am Kaen Marshell.  I am a dragon rider and on my way to the dwarven kingdom.”

“Lies!...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 023 - Always finding trouble

“Three days, maybe four.  It really depends on how the weather is,” Kaen informed Hess as he continued packing his bags with supplies.  “I’m not sure how long it will take for us to find what we are hunting once we get there.  Then I still have to try and meet with the dwarven king if I can.”

Hess simply nodded, lost in the awe of the shield Kaen had let him hold.

“Whatever you do, do not show them this shield.  In fact, keep it with you at all time...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 022 - The cost of potions

“I cannot promise these will work completely, but they should heal an injury for Pammon,” Lord Hured declared as he handed the two fist-size potions to Kaen.  Each of them was a black color, almost as if they were sucking the light out from around them. “Remember, he needs to break them in his mouth before swallowing them.  Do not worry about the glass. The notes I followed said they would dissolve without problems in his stomach.”

That does not look appealing ...

Hard Lessons as a Dad

So... sometimes being a parent isn't easy.  We make mistakes and this week I made one.

Someone had left a pretty negative review on my story and after some words and a being frustrated, I 'returned' the favor on theirs.  It was petty and I realize it now.

Even worse I complained about it to my children.  I lamented some things and even mentioned the act that I did.

Well my 14 year old took that as permission to do the same thing.  So with...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 021 - Always training

Staring at the ceiling, Kaen felt Pammon watching him while he lay in bed.

It’s too late to stay in bed.  You need to get up and start working on what we discussed.

Turning his head sideways, he stuck his tongue out at Pammon and extended his middle finger.

Do you think I want to lay here?  I’m weighing everything in my head.  We have too much to do, and I’m not sure what to do first.  Besides, we have two days before we can hea...

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 020 - What's in the vault

Herb stopped in the hallway, putting his palm on a black twelve-by-twelve-inch stone block that was recessed in the wall.  The hallway was like every other one except for a row of black stones lining the middle.  Dim light from the orbs filled the wide hallway as Kaen stood near Herb, wondering what would come next.

Moments after his hand was placed on the panel, a grinding noise began, and a stone doorway appeared next to it.

“How many of these doors are there?”

Rise of the Last Dragon Rider - Chapter 019 - A last goodbye

Herb was tapping his fingers against the small table as they waited for Aldric to arrive.  The sun was finally starting to climb the peaks, and Kaen was trying not to sleep in the chair as he sat there.

Both Selmah and Ava had returned to their homes, and Pammon was off hunting.  It had taken less than four hours for them to return, a feat that impressed Herb and Kaen both.

“I still cannot believe how fast he did that,” Herb stated, continuing his assault on the tabl...

Five groups had joined together to fight the seemingly never-ending army of wolves.

For over thirty minutes, the fighting had been furious, and Max, at one point, had fallen below half-health, making him consider pulling the potion he had in his storage out and drinking it.

Batrire finally managed to heal him.  Both he and Fowl couldn’t help but suffer injuries as two, or sometimes, three wolves would attack at the same time. Fighting them was much harder than fighting the ...
