Roger on the Run, part 1:

A special treat for you ladies and gents, a sneak preview of the upcoming action-packed storyline! Featuring lasers and robots and explosions and maybe we'll even disintegrate a few things! A return to the classic TWB after all this lovely-dovey kissy-face boring stuff I've subjected you all to for the last couple months. :)

The strip will be posted here, hopefully at least once or twice a week, depending on available time, up until the current "date night" storyline ends. At which point this ...

I actually spent quite a bit of time on that center panel, probably twice what a whole regular strip usually takes. :)  Aaaand then reducing it for upload made it kind of an indecipherable mess. I tried increasing the brightness and contrast in the strip version, which helped a bit, but it still didn't turn out quite as cool as I was hoping.

So here's a full-size crop of it, so you curious ladies and gents can go poking around in it. :)

I'd also wanted some stuff "in front", like a ...

A building, historical

In my mental model of TWB's Alaskan small town that has elements of several actual towns but isn't any one actual place, I picture the street that Cara's shop is on, as one that was originally part of a "main street", and thus had several prominent stores and buildings built on it many years ago. But as the town expanded, it naturally moved away from the street as a "city center", and as traffic declined, so did the fortunes of the stores.

At the current in-story time, the area is seeing a sma...

Roadside stand

A quick sketch for the author of Carry On, who does, in fact, raise sheep, is considering getting out of the sheep business, and wonders what to do with the remainder of her small flock of pets.

The trebuchet idea was vetoed almost immediately. :)

In Repose

The July 28th strip didn't come out quite as well as I was hoping, but I liked the pose in the first panel, so I tried redrawing it, larger and with more detail. And a little less oil. :)

I like how it came out, but the airbrush shading doesn't play well with the cel shading- I need to do one or the other, but not both. Background is a Googled stock photo.

If I have time, I want to try one with just the airbrush shading.

July 24, Revised:

After a couple of emails asking just what exactly is going on, I lightly revised the dialogue for July 24, which should hopefully clear things up a bit.

Kasi, of course, isn't one of Doc's employees, but it was pretty much a given that she'd enjoy being flung more than just about anyone. :)

Regular reader Tuyu thought Cara wasn't being quite forceful enough with Miki. :) The only thing missing is the classic sound effects of all the pots and pans and tin cans crashing and scattering when she lands. :)

Thursday Brain Fart

Had a bit of a brain fart, and didn't properly set the scheduler. So I had to replace Wednesdays strip with Thursdays. It'll straighten itself out the next time the system updates, but in the meantime, sorry for the inconvenience. :)

Thursday's Strip

I have no idea why the system didn't update. The scheduler was set, the strip was in place, etc.

Here's Thursday's strip, and I've temporarily replaced Wednesday's with today's on the main page. Everything should be back to normal as soon as Curt can cycle the system, or after tonights' update.

Sorry about that! :)

Fifteen Years, and Counting!

Believe it or not, June 18th marks a full fifteen years of TWB! Some 2,500+ strips (including "officially" numbered and special and holiday strips) a total of five books (plus one on the way (or so I keep being told) three Oscars (probably lost in the mail) six Emmys (fat chance) and (I once saw a photo of) a Hugo Award!

As always, thank you for coming along for the ride, and I hope you stick around to see where the next fifteen years takes us! :)

Pirta & Jake

Another bit of booksketchery from a while back. These date back to just as Jake and Pirta were "hooking up", and I always thought the idea she'd have a custom plush of him would be kind of cool.

Sorry posting has been kind of slow, high summer is my busy season, for all sorts of reasons. :) But no worries, I've been working on "inking" and coloring a couple of these old works for you, as I've had a few minutes here and there, and those'll be posted as soon as they're done.

The Famous Cell Phone Pic, Revisited

I had to replace my graphics tablet last week, when I managed to fix my slightly-troublesome one just enough to break it completely. :)

It took a couple of days and several inquiries to their help desk to get the new ones' drivers sorted out, but I finally got it up and running. In order to try it out, I took the "cell phone pic" that I posted a week or so ago, cleaned up the line art and colored it.

I like how it came out. Not bad for being scribbled in the back of a book ten years ago....

Not one of their better ideas...

Here's another book sketch from many years ago, a gag that I have meant, time and again, to turn into a proper canon strip, but I never had occasion to get the crew out swimming. :)

(For those that aren't familiar with the sport of paintball, the paintballs themselves are easily and entirely water-soluble. :) )

I am, however, planning a "beach party" storyline at some point, possibly after "this weekend's" tournament storyline.

Just havin' a bit of fun...

Here's something from the depths of my scrap-bin folders, that I had long forgotten about. :)

Years ago, on one of the tool-junkie boards, a fellow made a post complaining about his circular saw- seems he had, for the second time, managed to lop his own electrical cord off. But not while he was cutting wood, it was afterward, when he lowered the saw to his side, that the cord would catch in the slight gap left when the blade guard closed.

His complaint was, of course, that the sa...

Here Comes Trouble

Sorry I haven't had time to draw anything new for you ladies and gents, it's been a busy week in the shop, and likely may continue to be that way for a bit.

But here's a pic of Kasi I did as a T-shirt promotional back in 2010 for our big holiday sale.

I always liked the way this one came out. We haven't seen anyone use a mallet in anger in WAY too long. :)

The Famous Cell Phone Pic

Found another old book sketch for you! Back in the storyline wherein Pirta is hijacked out to the field and convinced to play some paintball, at one point she stops behind some bushes and removes the padded chest protector she'd been given, because it was all too hot.

Unknown to her, another player was concealed in the bushes, and snapped a photo using his cell phone- cameras in phones being pretty new at the time, and 'smartphones' not yet existing.

That led to Doc and Roger having to c...

An Addendum

Just for the Patrons, especially the new ones, I'd like to point out that, despite what the weekend come-on strip implied, I'm not generally known for "adult" art. Point in fact, the "without comment" strip is pretty much the most risque` thing I've ever drawn. :)

It has always been my goal to keep TWB reasonably family-friendly; not for any particular reason or need, it's just how I generally prefer to do things.

However, I am also neither a prude nor a puritan, and I do, in fact,...
