I stumbled over this old set of Regina shot through a fringe curtain one sunny day in a previous studio. It’s simply sunlæight streaming through a window, striking a voluptuous model and creating this wood-grain or topographical map effect.
One of the interesting things about hard light is that you can play games with exposure, like here, rendering the entire image low-key.
That is, if you use a modern digital camera with enough range to capture the deep shadows and retain some...

We shot this set in some bunkers on the west coast of Jylland. They are remnants of the German occupation in WW2.
Lilith and I had an afternoon and half a day the next day (this series) so we couldn’t wait for the weather to improve, except for the hours or so we sat huddled up in the car waiting for the real rain to stop,
We did a couple of lovely sets around this bunker, and it looks all fine and dandy.
Still, when you look at the BTS video (screenshot below, which does no...
As you can see it's not the easiest conditions to work under. And I'm wearing a hoody and a wind/waterproof jacket.
Lilith is wearing her birthday suit - and still perform flawlesly.

Georgia Brown and my trusty old vintage 50mm ƒ0.95 are doing what they do best, making remarkable, memorable images.
Window light from the studio windows, shot around ƒ1.2 at 1/1000 sec.
Look at this objectively:
The distance between Georgia's face and the wall is perhaps 2m/6'.
It's astonishing how blurry the background is and the difference in bokeh and swirl between the center of the lens and the sides.
Stay tuned for more of Georgia, including a BTS from...

There is something enticing about locations that are difficult to access.
In this case, it’s a sea cave accessible only when the tide is at its lowest and then only for about an hour.
This is where I shot this set with The Endless Sinner.
The cool thing about this cave is that it’s facing north, so it has gorgeous light, which is very suitable for model photography. You can see more on the Behind-the-scenes movie (Photographers and Vault tiers). If you don’t have access ...

If you read the caption to the image post, it might be easier to understand the urgency we are shooting with: I have the privilege of four models and many images to shoot in a relatively short time.
That said, I also find that the models follow when I act with energy, which gives much more interesting images.

Gentlemen and ladies.
It's time for what has become an annual recurring event, the December bonus video showcase; this time a lot of behind-the-scenes with CB Modelling, Georgia Brown, Wianamodel, and The Endless Sinner from my two Lanzarote workshops in September/October.
None of these videos contain any workshop participants for privacy reasons, but you still get a good idea of all the fun we have when traveling.
Another image at the same structure from Yesterday.
Here, I persuaded CB-Modelling to climb on top of the dome. And no it’s not a church but it does indeed have a cross on the roof, so there is a connotation.
It’s not impressive. I couldn’t get the right angle in the time I had available (seconds), but next time I come back, I know what I need to do to make it work fully.

Just a short movie with Wiana in the white compound.

During the same workshop mentioned yesterday, I came upon Wiana waiting in the perfect spot, all dressed up (in heels), for a few minutes before jumping into a duo.
So, I grabbed the opportunity and did a three-minute set, which resulted in these three images.
I love the synergy offered in this composition between Wiana, the cacti, and the palm tree.

In September and October, I did two unique workshops in Lanzarote. One location was this amazing quarry with a dash of art painted on it.
There is one major caveat to shooting here, though: The rock is volcanic and has sharp AF, so the ladies were not that happy.
After everyone had shot some great images, I wanted to set up a group shoot from a different angle to capture as much of the structure as possible.
I persuaded them by letting them pose with their shoes on an...

Jitka is posing on my ottoman in a bit of sun diffused by my new studio curtains.
I’ve previously used various diffuser forms to soften window light, and I still have some foil available.
But I’ve invested in some transparent white curtains, both short and long, that can quickly be drawn in front of the window. They leave a bit of pattern in hard light, which I think is an excellent addition. If I don’t like that, I can always put up the foil on the outside.

The Sweet Krisowitz juxtaposed on some concrete slaps on the old airfield.
It’s direct sun with a very slight cloud cover to diffuse the light slightly.
The light is very high overhead, and one of the reasons she stands out so well is the shadow the roof casts on the background but not on the model.
Darkening the background will always make a fair-skinned model stand out.
I particularly like these images of the gorgeous Faith Starr Official in a small series.
Lighting for this is a Westcott Zeppelin 57” deep umbrella, which works particularly well for women of color. It’s more complex and distinct than other softboxes, and the light makes the skin look magnificent.

Which of these is your favorite?

In this case, sunlight through a window provided the light.
On the outside, I'd fastened some Lee Opal foil; on the inside, I used the blinds to direct the slightly softened light further.

I had scheduled a shoot with Emily Moon in November, which almost didn’t happen but ended up being Magic (and hot AF).
Quickly recounted, her rental car produced a fatal engine error on the way, followed soon by a Brake failure; according to the dash, I tried to supply support via WhatsApp, but the car was toast. So, via the rental agency, she had the vehicle towed.
She was about 40 minutes away, so I decided to pick her up, undoubtedly earning some brownie points.

I found some extra images from a shoot with Depani Malika from the old control tower.
Again, only available light (daylight) from the windows in the frame.
Using daylight has the immense advantage of having the light source (the window) in the picture, which wouldn’t work with an umbrella or a softbox. The closer the light source is to the model, the more light will shape around the body and face and create depth because of the fall-off with the increased distance (the Inverse-s...

You all know the booty chair by now, and D Genviewe managed not to use it that way at all.
I'm not complaining, though, as we also did some proper ones (previously published) outside of these.
But I still love discovering how many ways to not sit on a chair exist.
And Dominique is very creative in that aspect.
Again, daylight from a couple of windows.

I love the unusual look of the exhaust chimney on the rear end of all the F-16 shelters on the airfield near my studio. And I persuaded Celia Cassiel to climb on top where we shot these.
Perhaps the chimney requires a bit of explanation:
When you back an F-16 fighter jet into a concrete structure and have to scramble it out of there fast, there is only one way:
Start the Jet engine.
This will have the side effect of putting out a massive superhot flame 10-15m / 30-50ft be...
One of my Patrons asked where I got the stands I use for my Styrofoam plates. The short answer is I had them welded and galvanized by a blacksmith.
In case anyone else wants to have a go, here are the specifics:
I’ve added a measurement stick in the pictures in Centimeters.
1 inch = 2.54cm
A couple of points:
The distance between the vertical brackets stabilizing the upright rods is just under 5cm, and my Styrofoam is 4cm thick...

This was a super fun session, as you can see from the accompanying BTS video.
We were both just jabbering and working simultaneously, which happens when everyone is relaxed and having fun.
This series was shot at the tail-end of another previously published series and was somewhat an extension of that.
In retrospect, the tying was perhaps a bit speedy, and I skipped a bit of the aesthetic, which is also why I didn’t find it valuable to do many close-ups.
Still, it...

I’ll let this model remain anonymous, but I can reveal she loved shooting these as an outlet for her exhibitionistic streak.
And a lot of models have a degree of exhibitionism.
They get a rush by being able to be fully nude and having others enjoy watching them. There are many reasons and rationales, but other than saying that photography can be a safe outlet for something that is otherwise frowned upon, I’ll leave it at that.
I’m working on a book project that will to...
