Lines is out - how are you using it?

My new Plugin with AudioThing has been out since Thursday now and I am happy about the positive reception. Making something non-standard is always a risk, but it seems that people enjoy what it can do. Especially the iOS crowd is having fun and catapulted the iPad version to the top of the music chart. It’s the first plugin I did with AudioThing that had that platform in mind from the get go, and I think that shows.

As Lines is many things at once I am very curious to hear what you d...

A most powerful piece of music

I had forgotten about Rzewski's version of this Chilean protest song. But when I saw on Twitter today the hopeful tweet from the Bandcamp union I was reminded of it. And like the first time I heard it decades ago I am torn apart as I listen to it. The motiv laid out in the first part is deconstructed, reflected, re-assembled in seemingly endless variations, but it remains the DNA of every part. The video here allows for reading the score, which is wonderful. Especially making use of  var...

Here is the promised video on a rare 8-Track drum machine from Scotland. It was a lot musical fun to play with dusty loops this machine plays.

Video Premiere: The Avantgarde Synthesizer of 1960s East Germany

Hey Ipsters,

Here is the new video! It took a day to film and five to edit and narrate. This is something I am truly only able to pull off thanks to your support. I will release an EP later today with all tracks I recorded with the amazing Subharchord, and one piece from it will be free for the higher tiers. A Soundpack is coming, too, as usual.

New Video: The Soothing Ambient And Microtonal Depths of a Decopunk Synthesizer

Hey Ipsters,

I set the premiere time wrong for some reason, probably because so many things on my mind, that the Terra vid came out at night, while I was fast asleep. So apologies for anyone waiting in chat. Uploading music after coffee, and the preset pack once I return to my home in Berlin.

"This is the Soma Terra, a microtonal digital synthesizer released just this year. Soma send it to me a while back for feedback, but I only got to play it now (sorry Vlad), as I felt th...

New Video: The Massive Sound Of An Experimental Soviet Drum Machine

Hey Ipsters,

back from holidays with a true banger! I found this incredibly rare drum machine in deplorable condition, but had it fixed up. It probably the most "soviet" instrument I have ever encountered. Simple technology a decade behind what was happening in "the West", but an industrial design that makes it look weigh as much as a tank. A sound that is massive but very unfashionable for its time, yet has a very melancholic undertone. It is both very dumb and very cool today.  View Post

More live news - Austria

Good news!

I will be playing Cafe Wolf in Graz on the 23rd of November, and give a class to the sound design course at FH Johanneum. First time as Hainbach in Austria! Anyone know something I should check out to film in Graz or has an idea for another show in the area?

Video Premiere: Exploring The New Tape and Test Equipment Studio in Porto

Today, a video on the new tape and test equipment studio at Sonoscopia, that was in large parts built around my collection of test equipment, especially those that made up my Landfill Totems.

The workshop I gave here will be available in full to all paid tiers - If you want the deep knowledge and inspiration, you will enjoy this.

Sadly, there were recording errors (I should have brought my own recorder), so there is no recording of the show or soundpacks this time.

A weekend cheers

I played a show in an abandoned mine (Zeche) in Hamm today and I wanted to share some pictures of this stunning place. I was supposed to play in the absolutely wonderful Kaude (the miners wash room) but permits did not come through. So it was a more conventional „abandoned hall turned club“ setting. Still, I had a lot of fun and I played very differently - more spacious, trippy and soft, fitting the Sunday afternoon after hour setting. It helped that I had made new patches for my app Flus...

Video Premiere: The Enchanting LoFi Textures Of An Optical Sound Sampler

Hey Ipsters,

Today, a new video on an almost forgotten instrument, the Chilton Talentmaker.

The Chilton Talentmaker is a 1970s optical sound sampler, very much like the slightly more famous Optigan. Designed as an easy device for beginners to make music and entertain at home, it found late fame through its use in Michel Gondry's "Eternal Sunshine of a Spotless Mind" in 2004.

I explore it a bit further than normal :-)

For the higher tiers, a very special sample pa...

Video Premiere: The Secret Of The Overtone Synthesizer

This is absolutely the strangest yet most musical science unit I have come across - the GE79 creates overtones from input sounds. It has many options that make it wonderful, especially due to crazy stereo phasing options. There is a sound pack for the top tier available, so don't miss that.

See you at the premiere!

Video Premiere: East Germany's Forgotten Electric Piano

Hey Ipsters,

here is a video on a rare instrument from behind the Iron Curtian - the East German Weltmeister Claviset 200. An absolutely charming electric piano, with a sound like a big toy piano. Very useful for scoring whimsical scenes, or horror, or just drifting away in a see of effects.

The 7.5 Ipsters get a sound pack of single notes, so you can assemble your own round robin version of this in any sampler.

See you at the premiere!

New Video Premiere: This Bauhaus Inspired Choir Sings Robot Dreams

Hey Ipsters,

I got completely lost in the choir by Teenage Engineering over the weekend. I posted a bunch about it, saw how divisive these cuties are, and still decided to make a video. Because I think its cool project from TE, something different and exciting. And I love vocal synthesis and physical things. There is much to hear and see in this one, and I touch on what I don't like also, but mostly I see potential.

One tip: pre-order a unit early, the waiting list will be long.
